April the 18th is National Animal Crackers Day. How did a cracker/cookie get so popular? I loved animal crackers, figuring out what animal it was and biting their legs and head off was great fun. I even liked carrying that box around by the string handle. I decided to find out the history behind them.

Cherry Coke
Outrageous!
My first experience with a Cherry flavored Coca-Cola was at Alpha Drugs, in Alpharetta, Georgia, when I was in Elementary School. My friend, Ross Stephens, would order it at the fountain and one day I did too, and I liked it!
Big Gulp
In 1946 Tote’m Stores changes its name to 7-Eleven to reflect the new extended hours – 7am to 11pm, seven days a week. In 1976, Dennis Potts, merchandise manager for 7-Eleven, against his will, went with a Coca-Cola idea for a large, square bottomed 32 ounce cup.
NuGrape Soda
John James Mangham discovered the formula for NuGrape in 1906, along with a fellow pharmacist, in Bremen, north west, Georgia.
I recently got a 1954 bottle from Walter, that he found at his parent’s Lawhorn Farm in Thomasville, Georgia. This particular bottle was bottled in Valdosta, Georgia. I thought I would do a little research on NuGrape Soda.

Mars, Incorporated is the manufacturer of confectionery, pet food, and other food products and a provider of animal care services. It is owned by the Mars family, one of the richest in the world. Franklin Clarence Mars started the Mars Candy Factory in 1911.
Sports Drinks
I like to have a sports drink, Gatorade or Powerade, on hand if I’m working hard, out on a very hot/humid day or get sick, like a flu. They always seem to make me feel better, so is it the science or is it just in my head?. Would water have brought the same relief?
Who Invented the Caesar Salad?
Obviously, Julius Caesar, around 62BC he insisted to start having a salad with his meals. This being his favorite, he ruled that the name “Caesar Salad” be used. Upon his death in Rome, Italy March 15, 44BC, others tried the salad and it became popular.
Feltman’s Hot Dogs
I was at a birthday party, for my friend Katie, and the host, Mike, announced (during the DejaBlue Grass Band set) that he was grilling up some Feltman’s hot dogs because he wanted people to experience the best hot dog ever. I was skeptical, being a Varsity man, and full of delicious barbecue and slaw that was provided at the party. I was sitting by the grill, and just couldn’t resist, so I tried one. I was already stuffed but I have to admit, best hot dog ever!
Black Pepper
I’ve been eating black pepper ever since I can remember. I use it all the time but really had no idea where it came from, past the fact that it is ground from peppercorns. Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is produced from the still-green, unripe drupe of the pepper plant.
Baking Soda or Baking Powder?
What is the difference between baking soda and baking powder? I saw a commercial telling me that I could learn the difference if I paid to get the Discovery + network. I decided to just figure it out.
