These artists have recorded country #1 hits like “You Always Come Back to Hurting Me,” “Ridin’ My Thumb to Mexico,” and “That’s the Way Love Goes”; performed comedy and TV on Laugh-In, Sesame Street, The Monkees; sang for bands such as Hairy Hippie, The Toilets, Seventeen and The Alarm; and produced over 1000 episodes of TV like Saved By The Bell.

The French Connection (1971)

All right, Popeye’s here! Get your hands on your heads, get off the bar, and get on the wall.

The French Connection (1971) is a gritty crime thriller directed by William Friedkin, adapted from the 1969 non-fiction book by Robin Moore. The characters of Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (played by Gene Hackman) and Detective Buddy “Cloudy” Russo (played by Roy Scheider) in The French Connection (1971) were inspired by real-life NYPD detectives Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, whose groundbreaking investigation disrupted a major heroin smuggling operation in the early 1960s.

Gene Hackman Dies

His film breakthrough came with “Bonnie and Clyde” (1967), earning him an Academy Award nomination.

Eugene Allen Hackman, professionally known as Gene Hackman, was born on January 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California. His parents were Eugene Ezra Hackman, who worked as a printing press operator for the local newspaper, the Commercial-News, and Anna Lyda Elizabeth (Gray). He had a younger brother named Richard.
