Phil Lesh, a founding member and bassist of the Grateful Dead, is known for his unique contributions to the band’s psychedelic and improvisational sound. Born Philip Chapman Lesh on March 15, 1940, in Berkeley, California, he showed an early interest in music and studied classical violin and trumpet as a young boy.
