Firework Photos

Photographing fireworks can be one of the most visually rewarding forms of night photography, offering a unique blend of color, motion, and light that challenges both technical skill and creative vision. Unlike typical snapshots, fireworks photography requires an understanding of long exposure, timing, and environmental awareness.

All the photos in this post were taken by me. They are of the Wills Park, Alpharetta, Georgia July 4, 2025, Firework display. The horizontal black lines, through all the photos are because we set up behind a telephone pole.

What is a Speedlight (Speedlite)?

Speedlite is Canon’s name for its external flashgun range. Not to be confused with Speedlights, which is the name used by Nikon for its flashguns. Other manufacturers also use these names.

A speedlight in photography refers to a compact, portable flash unit that mounts typically on the camera’s hot shoe, though it can also be used off-camera for more creative lighting setups. Also known as a “flashgun,” a speedlight is a versatile tool that provides artificial light to illuminate scenes, subjects, or fill in shadows, especially in low-light environments or to balance harsh daylight.

What is a Four Thirds Camera?

Mirrorless cameras with Four Thirds sensors have gained popularity among both enthusiasts and professionals.

Mirrorless cameras using a Four Thirds sensor are a type of digital camera that utilizes a specific sensor size known as the Four Thirds format. This format was jointly developed by Olympus and Kodak and was introduced in 2003. It is commonly used in mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (MILCs) and is characterized by its compact size and lightweight design.
