
Photographing fireworks can be one of the most visually rewarding forms of night photography, offering a unique blend of color, motion, and light that challenges both technical skill and creative vision. Unlike typical snapshots, fireworks photography requires an understanding of long exposure, timing, and environmental awareness.
All the photos in this post were taken by me. They are of the Wills Park, Alpharetta, Georgia July 4, 2025, Firework display. The horizontal black lines, through all the photos are because we set up behind a telephone pole.

The fleeting nature of fireworks means there is only a narrow window to get it right—each burst lasting only seconds and each show offering only a handful of opportunities. Because of this, preparation and familiarity with your equipment are essential. Knowing how to work with a tripod, how to control exposure manually, and how to anticipate the rhythm of the fireworks are key elements in capturing compelling images. Long exposure is the heart of fireworks photography.

Unlike conventional photography where shutter speeds are often a fraction of a second, fireworks shots benefit from exposures that last several seconds, allowing the camera to record the full trajectory of each burst. The camera should be set to manual mode, with shutter speeds typically ranging between 2 and 10 seconds, depending on the desired effect.

Aperture settings often range from f/8 to f/16 to balance light intensity, while ISO is usually kept low, around 100 or 200, to reduce noise. Manual focus is preferred, ideally set to infinity or slightly backed off, as autofocus struggles in low-light conditions. Using a remote shutter release or a self-timer helps avoid camera shake when pressing the shutter button.

The location and framing are just as important as the camera settings. Choosing a site with an unobstructed view of the sky, preferably with an interesting foreground or background, adds depth and context to the photos. Landmarks, silhouettes, or reflections in water can enhance the composition. It’s often beneficial to arrive early to scout

the area and claim a good vantage point. Once the show begins, timing is everything. Anticipating the moment of explosion and triggering the shutter just before it happens helps ensure that the entire burst is captured. This becomes easier with experience, as fireworks typically follow a rhythmic sequence.

- AWB-W (Auto White Balance – works well to eliminate the off-color tint in photos) White priority (AWB-W) which is a more accurate setting for tungsten light, aiming for a neutral colour rendition and thereby removing the warmer tones. AWB White priority is designed to work with tungsten lighting. The AWB-W setting is less effective in daylight and with other illumination.

Keeping the lens aimed at a consistent portion of the sky helps to frame the action effectively, avoiding missed shots due to unexpected changes in position. Creativity also plays a role in producing standout images. Some photographers experiment with zooming during long exposures to create surreal streaks of light or move the camera slightly for abstract, impressionistic effects. Multiple bursts can be captured in a single frame by keeping the shutter open

for several seconds or using the bulb mode, though too many explosions in one shot can lead to overexposure or visual clutter. Post-processing offers further refinement—adjusting contrast, cropping, and removing noise can enhance the clarity and vibrancy of the final image.

While smartphones have increasingly powerful night modes, DSLRs and mirrorless cameras still offer the most control and best image quality, especially in the low-light, high-contrast environment of fireworks displays. Ultimately, photographing fireworks combines technical proficiency with artistic timing. It’s an exercise in patience and precision, but when done well, it yields dramatic images that capture the fleeting beauty of celebration and spectacle.
What I Learned: Next time I will start out my shutter speed at 4-6 seconds, decrease to 3-4 seconds mid show, and then go to 1-2 seconds for the finale when there is a ton of light coming into the lens. Oh yeah, and not to set-up behind power lines.

From the first crackle in the sky to the grand finale, the camera becomes a tool not just for documentation, but for visual storytelling. The dynamic interplay of color, light, and shadow provides a playground for the creative eye, making fireworks photography a satisfying pursuit for amateurs and professionals alike.
