I’ll list some of my favorite rock operas in this series of posts. A rock opera is a collection of rock songs that together tell a unified story or follow a central theme, often with characters and a narrative arc like a traditional opera. Unlike concept albums, rock operas are typically more theatrical and may be adapted for stage or film.

Sérgio Mendes Dies

Known for blending bossa nova, samba, and jazz with pop.

Sérgio Mendes is a Brazilian musician known for blending bossa nova, samba, and jazz with a distinct pop sound. Over his long career, Mendes has become a globally recognized figure in Brazilian music and has had significant influence on popularizing the genre outside of Brazil. Sérgio Santos Mendes was born on February 11, 1941, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Soundtracks – Jesus Christ Superstar

You have nothing in your hands, Any power you have, comes to you from far beyond, Everything is fixed, and you can’t change it.

Back in the early 70s, I would go to a friend’s house to fly model rockets. He played his “Jesus Christ Superstar” album for me. I bought a copy just as soon as I was able. I remember listening to it and following along in the enclosed lyric booklet. This was my first experience of a rock opera (I didn’t hear The Who’s “Tommy” until later).
