“Sugar, Sugar” / “Melody Hill” – Doyle’s Space: Music Hall of Fame – SOS Award

My first SOS Award goes to Sugar, Sugar by the Archies!

The SOS awards (Stand Out Singles) will go to some of my favorite singles. The rules are that the single was released in the United States, and is a 7″, 45 RPM record. While it will be a bonus if the single charted well, or has a great B-side, that will not affect the awarding.

Paul Vance Dies

“Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini” dominated AM radio in 196o, making Brian Hyland a teen idol in the process. The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was a hit around the world. It was written by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss and first released in June 1960, inspired by Vance’s daughter, who was too shy to wear a bikini in public.

My Favorite Albums – The Archies – The Archies

I saw her from the corner of my eye, eye, eye
Yes she looked so good I thought I’d die

Another of my favorites is the debut, self titled album, for The Archies. It was the first album that I purchased on its release day. In 1968, I got Mother to drive me to the Kmart in Sandy Springs where I picked it off the record sections new release end cap. I played it over and over, hundreds of times before I dropped it and lost the first two songs on each side!
