Sistering Joists

Building codes generally permit sistering.

Sistering joists is a longstanding construction technique used to reinforce or repair structural floor or ceiling systems by attaching a new joist alongside an existing one. The practice dates back centuries, with early uses seen in timber-framed structures where aging or damaged beams needed strengthening.

What is a Burl?

Poachers illegally harvest burls by cutting them off living trees, an act that can seriously injure or even kill the tree over time.

A burl is a naturally occurring growth on a tree, often appearing as a rounded, knotted protrusion on the trunk, branches, or roots. Unlike the smoother contours of typical tree growth, a burl is formed when the tree undergoes stress from injury, virus, fungus, or insect infestation. This disruption causes the wood grain to grow in a chaotic, interlocked manner rather than in the straight lines seen in regular wood.

G10 Fiberglass

G10 is a fiberglass-epoxy composite material that is highly durable and corrosion-resistant.

G-10 fiberglass is a high-pressure laminate material made from layers of woven glass fabric impregnated with epoxy resin and cured under high heat and pressure. It was originally developed for electrical and electronic applications due to its excellent insulating properties, but its strength, durability, and resistance to moisture and chemicals have made it valuable in a variety of industries.

Staining Wood

Different wood species absorb stain differently, affecting the richness and tone of the final finish.

Wood staining is the process of enhancing the natural beauty of wood by adding color while allowing the grain to remain visible. Stains penetrate the wood fibers, emphasizing their texture and character while providing some level of protection. Unlike paint, which sits on the surface and forms an opaque layer, stain soaks into the wood, enriching its appearance without obscuring the underlying patterns.

Balsa Wood

The balsa tree is native to the rainforests of Central and South America, thriving primarily in Ecuador, which produces the majority of the world’s supply.

Balsa wood, derived from the Ochroma pyramidale tree, is renowned for its lightweight yet strong properties, making it an essential material in various industries. The balsa tree is native to the rainforests of Central and South America, thriving primarily in Ecuador, which produces the majority of the world’s supply.

Thermally Modified Wood

While thermally modified wood has a number of advantages, it can also be more expensive than other types of wood.

Thermally modified wood (TMW) refers to wood that has been subjected to high temperatures in a controlled environment to enhance its properties. The modification processes typically involve heating the wood to temperatures between 320°F (160°C) and 500°F (260°C ) in an oxygen-deprived environment, which alters the wood’s chemical and physical properties, resulting in improved durability, stability, and resistance to biological decay.

Barrel Staves

On Oak Island they continue to find ancient barrel staves from the 1600 – 1700s.

Barrel staves are an essential component in the construction of barrels, which have been used for centuries to store and transport various liquids, most notably alcoholic beverages like wine, whiskey, and beer. The staves are the individual wooden pieces that make up the sides of a barrel,

Stihl Gas Leaf Blower

The semi-automatic choke and the new start/stop switch make it virtually impossible to flood when starting this unit. The high-performance, low-emission engine makes quick work of leaves and other yard waste.

I bought a Stihl BG 56C gas leaf blower for minimal use around my house. I use it to blow grass off my driveway, the leaves off the concrete areas around my shed and deck, and the pine straw off my roof. It is more than adequate for these tasks.
