ThE EnD oF TaB

57 years ago TaB was introduced by the Coca Cola Company. It was Cokes answer to The Royal Crown Company Diet Rite cola and was marketed as a way to “keep tabs” on your weight. In 2020 Coke is calling it quits on TaB.

It was originally sweetened with a mixture of cyclamate and saccharin but after the FDA banned cyclamate they reformulated TaB’s primary sweeter to sodium saccharin. Even through the saccharin cancer scares the drink remained popular. In 1984 Coke changed the main sweetner to NutraSweet which caused a lot of consumer taste complaints.

TaB was the most popular in the 60’s and 7o’s and several different flavors were made like Root Beer, Lemon Lime, Ginger Ale, Black Cherry, Strawberry, Orange as well as TaB Energy, Caffeine Free and Clear (a caramel color-free version). Mother used to buy some, and pretend to drink it, but I really don;t think she like it – she just wanted to try to be more healthy. I never liked it and never drank much at all.
