Spaceballs (1987)

I watched the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1987 Mel Brooks movie Spaceballs on BBC America. I hadn’t seen it since it was in the theater back in 1987. It is a science fiction parody movie of the Star Wars trilogy with some Star Trek, Alien, Wizard of Oz, 2001 a Space Odyssey and Planet of the Apes. It is co-written (with Ronny Graham and Thomas Meehan, produced and directed by Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History f the World Part 1, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Dracula: Dead and Loving It).

As the Hans Solo character, Lone Star, is Bill Pullman (Ruthless People, Brain Dead, A League of Their Own, Singles, Sleepless in Seattle, Casper, Independence Day, Lake Placid, Spy Games, The Equalizer, Dark Waters),

Princess Leia, Princess Vespa is Daphne Zuniga (Vision Quest, The Fly II, TV episodes of Melrose Place, One Tree Hill), Chewbacca, Barf is John Candy (1941, The Blues Brothers, Stripes, Heavy Metal, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Splash, Brewster’s Millions,

Little Shop of Horrors, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, TV episodes of Second City TV), C3PO, Dot Matrix is Joan Rivers (Look Who’s Talking, Serial Mom, Iron Man 3),

Darth Vader, Dark Helmet is Rick Moranis (Strange Brew, Ghostbusters i and II, Brewster’s Millions, Little Shop of Horrors, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, The Flintstones, Big Bully, TV episodes of SCTV)

Yoda, Yogurt and Emperor Palpatine, President Skroob, are both Mel Brooks, Grand Moff Tarkin, Colonel Sandurz is George Wyner (Bad News Bears, Fletch, Fletch Lives, Not Another Teen Movie, American Pie 2),

Dick Van Patten (Beware! The Blob, Soylent Green, Westworld, Superdad, The Strongest Man in the World, Gus, The Shaggy D.A., Freaky Friday, High Anxiety, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, TV episodes of Emergency!, McMillan & Wife, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The Six Million Dollar Man, Eight is Enough),

Michael Winslow (“The man of 10,000 sound effects”, Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie, Police Academy – all movies, Gremlins), Ronny Graham (History of the World, Part I, Robin Hood: Men in Tights) and

Dom DeLuise as the voice of Pizza the Hutt (Jabba the Hutt) (Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, Hot Stuff, Smokey and the Bandit II, History of the World, Part I, The Cannonball Run, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Johnny Dangerously, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, TV episodes of The Dom DeLuise Show, Burke’s Law),

Mel Brooks made a deal with George Lucas for the parody that there would be no Spaceballs action figures. The movie is hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud many times.

I’ll give the movie 4 out of 5 stars. For more information read Wikipedia, IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.
