The Chipmunks Sing The Beatles Hits

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

The Chipmunks (or Alvin and the Chipmunks or David Seville and the Chipmunks) were an American animated virtual band created by Ross Bagdasarian (David Seville-stage name) in 1958 (the year I was born). The chipmunks are Alvin (red hat), Simon, and Theodore (glasses). In 1964 they released “The Chipmunks Sing The Beatles Hits” on Liberty Records.

This was an album that my mother bought when I was 6 years old. The first time I ever heard these Beatles songs were from this album. All the songs were written by Lennon and McCartney except for “Twist and Shout” which was penned by Phil Medley and Bert Russell.

David Seville’s father had put the notion in his head that a Chipmunks singing The Beatles record would be a cute idea. When in London, David spoke to The Beatles in person, and they were supportive of the plan. The engineer, Dave Hassinger, won the 1964 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Recording – Special Or Novel Effects for this album.

In the song, “Twist & Shout” Dave Seville tells Alvin that his wig is falling off and to fix it, with Alvin yelling “Okay! Okay!” and then the sound of Alvin fixing the wig with muffled tones.
