UPS Tracking Numbers

What can brown do for you?

I’ve been shipping UPS for just about my whole working career and I’ve never really known what all those numbers in a UPS tracking code mean. I know your shipper account number is in there but what do all those others mean?

Let’s break it down:

1Z  (domestic shipment)
+ 6 A (shipper account)
+ 2 S (service code)
+ 7 I (package identifier)
+ 1 C (check digit)

1Z has been the standard, that was adopted in the 1990s, for a domestic shipment.

The next 6 numbers/letters are the shipper’s account numbers. In my example above it is represented by AAA AAA.

The next 2 numbers/letters are the service code. Almost everything I ship is UPS Ground so the SS would be 03. I have listed all the UPS service codes at the bottom of this post.

The next 7 numbers IIII III are the package identifier. This number is usually just random numbers but the shipper can customize this sequence. Some shippers use a truncated invoice number.

The last number C is a check digit to detect errors and to verify that all of the characters in an identification number are entered correctly.
