Santa’s Other Reindeer

Now there’s Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, Blixzen, Rudolph, Flossie, Glossie, Racer, Pacer, Fearless, Peerless, Ready, Steady, Feckless, Speckless, Steven, Fluffy, Horace, Chantel, Skippy, Rainbow, Patches, Montel, and ???

I mentioned a few alternate reindeer in my previous post “Santa’s Reindeer“, like the South Park rescue team and the reindeer in L. Frank Baum’s book. Here I’ll go into more detail about those other less known reindeer. We all know Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, Blixzen, and Rudolph, but who were the others? Like, Robbie the Reindeer is the son of Rudolph and appeared in two BBC specials.

Olive, the Other Reindeer is the subject of a 1997 book and a 1999 Christmas special produced by Matt Groening… Olive is a pun on “all of” the other reindeer lyric line in the song “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” by Johnny Marks. In 1962, Ray Stevens’ song “Santa Claus is Watching You” added more reindeer; Bruce, Marvin, Leon, Cletus, George, Bill, Slick, Do-right, Clyde, Ace, Blackie, Queenie, Prince, Spot, and Rover. Loretta Lynn had a song in 1974 named “Shadrack, the Black Reindeer”. Shadrack helped an aging Rudolph to lead the team that year.

Joe Diffie released “Leroy the Redneck Reindeer” in 1995 who took charge of Santa’s team when Rudolph had a cold. In 1997 the animated film “Annabelle’s Wish” tells the story of Annabelle, a young calf who dreams to fly after meeting Santa and his reindeer.

The 1998 film “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie” introduces Mitzi as Rudolph’s mother and Rudolph’s love interest Zoy and his cousin Arrow (Cupid’s son). In the 2002 movie “The Santa Clause 2” the reindeer in training is named Chet.

In the 2003 film “Blizzard” the title character is Blitzen’s daughter and Delphi is Blizzard’s mother. The 2019 film “Noelle” has a white calf named Snowcone. In 2004, Australian trio Tripod wrote the song “Fabian” which begins with a list of reindeer “You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and … Chopper and Nixon.” The stop-motion animated TV special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1964 has Blitzen’s son Fireball and there is a young fawn named Clarice.

Lightning, from the Sesame Street Christmas 1996 special, “Elmo Saves Christmas” is a reindeer-in-training. There was a 1999 TV special “Robbie the Reindeer” where he was assumed to be Rudolph’s son with supernatural powers.

The TV show “My Friends Tigger & Pooh”, introduced a special “Super Sleuth Christmas Movie” in 2007 that had Vixen’s husband Frost and daughter Holly. The 2008 TV special “The Flight Before Christmas” is about reindeer Niko whose mother Oona claimed he was fathered by one of Sant’s team who turns out to be Prancer. The sequel “Little Brother, Big Trouble: A Christmas Adventure” features Niko and his stepbrother Jonni and Oona marries Lenni. The oversized top-secret super sleuth reindeer Thrasher is in the 2009 Disney TV special “Prep & Landing”.
