Stacks of 45’s – Venus/Hot Sand

Yeah, baby, she’s got it

When I was young before I had cassettes, the only good way of making a playlist of songs was to stack 45s on the turntable. I would arrange for them to play my favorite songs in my favorite order. These posts are about records I had in my stacks.

“Venus” was the mega-hit song for the Dutch rock band Shocking Blue. Written by Robbie van Leeuwen, it was initially released in the Netherlands, in the summer of 1969, and topped the charts in nine countries including the U.S. Billboard, Cash Box, and Record World charts. The cover by Bananarama in 1986 topped the charts in six countries.

By 1969 Shocking Blue was Robbie van Leeuwen (Guitar, Sitar, backing vocals), Cor van der Beek (drums), Klaasje van der Wal (bass) and Mariska Veres (lead vocalist). The song also had a 1969 video that was featured in the 2020 Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit. It leads off the “Stars on 45” 1981 song medley by Dutch studio group Stars on 45 which also includes The Archies and The Beatles.

I also love the “B” side, which was “Hot Sand”. It may have been the first song I had heard with a sitar. Venus was on the U.S. album “The Shocking Blue” which was released on Colossus (CS-1000) in 1970. Venus/Hot Sand are bonus tracks on the “At Home” CD release. Shocking Blue is also noted for being the first Dutch group to hit number 1 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Lyrics

“Venus”

A goddess on a mountain top
Was burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
And Venus was her name

She’s got it
Yeah, baby, she’s got it
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
At your desire
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
At your desire

Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making every man mad
Black as the dark night she was
Got what no one else had

She’s got it
Yeah, baby, she’s got it
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
At your desire
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
At your desire

She’s got it
Yeah, baby, she’s got it
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
At your desire
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
At your desire

“Hot Sand”

Summer day over
And darkness comes with mighty wings
The sea gull’s head is tired
And when he’s tired then he sings

Hot sand. I’m walkin’ in the hot sand
Makin’ love on the hot sand
Together with you, yeah, yeah, yeah

I’m waitin’ for the hour
I’m waitin’ for a place to stay
Someplace where I can rest
And not think about the empty day

Hot sand. I’m walkin’ in the hot sand
Makin’ love on the hot sand
Together with you, yeah, yeah, yeah

If you wonder why baby
If you wonder what you hear
It’s useless to describe
Even wonder of what’s in your ear

Hot sand, it’s so good
On the hot sand
I’m strollin’ in the hot sand
Together with you… yeah, yeah, yeah
