Roxy the Biologist

“I’ve mainly been sharing information, but also doing posts reminding people that we can’t achieve environmental justice without achieving social justice. It’s amazing to see people, myself included, taking the time to learn more, stepping up and seeing what we can do to do better.”

Roxy Furman holds a First Class honors degree in BSc Zoology (INT)[1] with a study abroad year in Australia. She has a Master’s degree in Wildlife Filmmaking[2] from the University of the West of England Bristol, a course run in conjunction with The BBC Studios Natural History Unit (NHU)[3].

I saw Roxy on the History channel’s “The Proof is Out There” investigative show. She has appeared as a Zoologist expert in 8 episodes. She also produced, directed, edited, and was the cinematographer for her own short film, “I Am Capable”.

She truly believes there is hope for this planet and through social media, she educates others about the threats our planet is facing, raising awareness about intersectional environmentalism, consumerism, animal agriculture, the exotic pet trade, and much more, and suggest ways that we can all help to overcome these issues. She grew up as a vegetarian and remembers reading her dad’s big animal encyclopedia every night. At 6 years old her family went to Bird Island in the Seychelles[4], which is renowned for its conservation work with sea turtles.

On that trip, she told her parents “I want to be a conservationist.” Growing up she did a lot of volunteering like going to a rescue dog home and walking dogs. When living in Australia she worked at Lone Pine[5] where they’re researching cures for chlamydia in koalas, which is what’s really threatening them. On a trip to South Africa, she borrowed a friend’s camera. This is when she realized that photography would help her spread the word about animals making it more digestible and entertaining.

Starting out self-taught she realized that education in filmmaking would let her meet the goal of getting her word out. She also started her own business, the Zephyr Eco Market which is a “webstore” full of eco-friendly alternatives to mainstream products, helping people to live in a way that minimizes their impact on our planet.

The store also supports two conservation charities: One Tree Planted, which plants trees in areas that have been destroyed by deforestation, and Painted Dog Conservation, which provides work for local people in Zimbabwe to remove wildlife snares and turn them into artwork.

They then sell that artwork and give money back to the village and the community, teaching them that you can still earn money from wildlife without killing them.

Roxy wants to simply put out the information and make people fall in love with those species, rather than trying to force an opinion or gruesome statistics onto them because shock tactics and gore is not her kind of way of dealing with things.
