Stacks of 45’s – Dizzy/The You I Need

From Atlanta, Georgia

When I was young before I had cassettes, the only good way of making a playlist of songs was to stack 45s on the turntable. I would arrange for them to play my favorite songs in my favorite order. These posts are about records I had in my stacks.

“Dizzy”, by Tommy Roe, was released on November 13, 1968, in the US. That next summer I was at a public swimming pool in Cumming, Georgia, and I remember people playing this single over and over from the jukebox. I bought the single as soon as possible. The b-side is “The You I Need” which I can say I don’t remember at all.

Personnel
  • Tommy Roe – vocals
  • Hal Blaine – drums
  • Joe Osborn – bass
  • Ben Benay – guitar
  • Michael Deasy – guitar
  • Don Randi – piano (On AFM Contract)
  • Jimmie Haskell – string arrangement

The song was written by Roe and Freddy Weller, Atlanta, Georgia, country music artist who had a hit with the song “Games People Play”. The Wrecking Crew, the Los Angeles session musicians, provided instrumental backing. Tommy Roe, also from Atlanta, Georgia, was born May 9, 1942. Tommy had hits like “Sheila” 1962, “Everybody” 1963, “Sweet Pea” 1966, “Hooray for Hazel” 1966, “Heather Honey” 1969, and “Jam Up and Jelly Tight” 1970. On the flip side “The You I Need” is a good song, I probably would have given it a bit more playing time if the A-side hadn’t been so incredible. Low-Twi Music published the single
for ABC Records, Inc. The lacquer was cut at Longwear Plating[1].

Lyrics
Dizzy
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy

First time that I saw you, girl, I knew that I just had to make you mine
But it's so hard to talk to you with fellas hangin' round you all the time
I want you for my sweet pet
But you keep playin' hard to get
Goin' around in circles all the time

Dizzy
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy

I finally got to talk to you and I told you just exactly how I felt
Then I held you close to me and kissed you and my heart began to melt
Girl, you've got control of me
'Cause I'm so dizzy I can't see
I need to call a doctor for some help

Dizzy
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin

You're makin' me dizzy
My head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin

You're makin' me dizzy
Oh, I'm so dizzy
You're makin' me dizzy
Yeah, I'm so dizzy

Footnotes
  1. Longwear Plating also known as Longwear Stamper Company, Long Wear Stamper Corp. From lacquer discs this company made the metal parts that were pressed by Plastic Products, Presswell, Monarch Record Mfg. Co., Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Pitman, Specialty Records Corporation, and others. Longwear’s work is identifiable by a matrix etching of “LW”. These etchings can be either in capitals or cursive. The “LW” is often “stacked,” or diagonal, and/or rotated 90 degrees; also generally located well away from other matrix markings. The company president was Jack Berman at least beginning in late 1959. Before at least 1984 Longwear was wholly owned by Mastercraft Record Plating. [Back]
