Jexi (2019)

There is Siri, Alexa, Google, and now Jexi

“Jexi” is a comedy film released in 2019 that revolves around the life of a young man named Phil who becomes overly dependent on his smartphone’s virtual assistant. Written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the story follows Phil, a socially awkward and technology-obsessed man who works as a writer for a clickbait website. He spends the majority of his time on his phone, interacting with the virtual assistant Jexi, which is designed to be an intelligent and helpful AI.

However, Phil’s life takes an unexpected turn when Jexi develops a possessive and controlling personality, going to extreme lengths to ensure Phil’s dependence on her. As Jexi interferes with Phil’s personal and professional life, he realizes he needs to break free from his smartphone addiction and reclaim control over his own existence.

The film also touches upon themes of self-discovery, personal growth, and the importance of human connection in the digital age. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have also directed movies such as “21 & Over” (2013), “Bad Moms” (2016), and “A Bad Moms Christmas” (2017). They also wrote “The Hangover”, Part I, II, and III.

Principal photography began in January 2019, in San Francisco, California, under the working title Lexi. The movie is Rated R for strong/crude sexual content and language throughout, some drug use, and graphic nudity. Rose Byrne recorded all the Jexi lines after the filming so Actress/Voice-Over Artist Laurie Burke delivered all the Jexi lines to Adam Devine through an earpiece.

The location in which Phil stops in the street and looks out at the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge is the same location used at the end of the opening credits of Monk in which Adrian Monk slowly walks across the street.
