Yonah Mountain is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a variety of recreational activities and stunning panoramic views. The mountain is situated within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, part of the Yonah Mountain Wilderness Area, and between the cities of Cleveland and Helen, Georgia. One of the distinctive features of Yonah Mountain is its unique granite rock formations.
APPROXIMATE Physical Address: 1900 Chambers Road, Cleveland, GA. From downtown Cleveland, Georgia, go north 0.3 mile on Highway 129. Turn right onto Georgia Highway 74 and go 2.2 miles. Turn right on Tom Bell Road and go 0.9 mile and take the 2nd right turn onto Chambers Road. Go 0.7 mile and turn right on Forest Service Road 323. Go 0.3 mile to the trailhead parking lot. No fee is required. Open Year round. Helen, Georgia is about 6 miles northeast of the trailhead.


The mountain is composed of large granite outcrops that attract rock climbers from across the region. The Yonah Mountain Trail, a well-maintained hiking trail, provides access to the summit. Hikers can enjoy a moderately challenging ascent through a lush forest,

with opportunities to appreciate the diverse flora and fauna of the area. The trail offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape, making it a popular spot for photography and nature observation. Yonah Mountain has historical significance as well. It is said to have been named by the Cherokee people, with “Yonah” meaning “bear” in their language.

The 5th Ranger Training Battalion, Ranger Training Brigade of the United States Army conducts the Mountain Phase of Ranger School on Yonah Mountain. The Ranger School is a 62-day United States Army small unit tactics and leadership course that develops functional skills directly related to units whose mission is to engage the enemy

in close combat and direct fire battles. Ranger training was established in September 1950 at Fort Benning, Georgia (now called Fort Moore). The Ranger course has changed little since its inception. The course is 62 days in duration and divided into three phases as follows: Benning Phase, Mountain Phase, and Swamp Phase.
