O.J. Simpson, born Orenthal James Simpson on July 9, 1947, in San Francisco, California, had a life filled with remarkable highs and devastating lows. Simpson was drafted by the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL) in 1969.

Over the next decade, he became one of the most celebrated and dominant players in the league, earning numerous accolades and setting records. His football career reached its zenith in 1973 when he became the first player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season.

However, Simpson’s life took a dark turn in 1994 when his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, were brutally murdered outside her home in Los Angeles. Simpson became the prime suspect in what became known as the “Trial of the Century.”

The ensuing trial gripped the nation as it was televised live, showcasing the stark divide in public opinion along racial lines and raising questions about celebrity justice. Despite a wealth of evidence against him, including DNA evidence and a controversial low-speed chase in a white Ford Bronco,

Simpson was acquitted of the murders in 1995. The verdict sparked outrage and debate across the country. The legal saga did not end with the criminal trial. In 1997, Simpson was found liable for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in a civil suit brought by their families.

He was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages, a decision that further polarized public opinion. Years later, in 2007, Simpson made headlines again when he was arrested and charged with armed robbery and kidnapping in Las Vegas. He and a group of men had attempted to reclaim sports memorabilia from a hotel room, an incident that Simpson claimed was an attempt to retrieve his own property. In 2008,

he was convicted on multiple felony counts and sentenced to 33 years in prison. O.J. Simpson’s life has been a complex and controversial journey, marked by extraordinary success and profound tragedy. His legacy remains deeply intertwined with the criminal justice system and the media landscape of the late 20th century. On Oct. 1, 2017, 70-year-old Simpson walked out of Nevada’s Lovelock Correctional Institute as a free man.

He moved from Miami to Las Vegas and commenced a lifestyle focused on golf, friends and regular posts to social media. O.J. Simpson died Wednesday April 10, 2024 after a battle with prostate cancer at the age of 76.
