
With school, around here, just out for the summer, it got me thinking about songs about school. I decided to list some of my favorites here. There are songs here for them, whether they are just beginning, starting a new grade, beginning High School/College, or graduating. Enjoy part one.
Another Brick In The Wall – Pink Floyd

“Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd is a three-part composition from their 1979 rock opera album “The Wall.” The song critiques the rigid and oppressive British school system, reflecting broader themes of isolation and alienation. Part I introduces the protagonist, Pink, dealing with the loss of his father.

Part II, the most famous segment, features a children’s choir and protests against the dehumanizing aspects of schooling with its memorable line, “We don’t need no education.” Part III represents Pink’s mental breakdown as he completes his metaphorical wall. The single “Another Brick in the Wall, Part II” topped charts globally, reaching number one in several countries, including the US and the UK .
School Day – Chuck Berry

“School Day” is a classic rock and roll song by Chuck Berry, released as a single in 1957. The song vividly depicts the daily life of a high school student, capturing the mundane routine of attending classes and the excitement of the end of the day, leading up to the liberation of dancing to rock and roll music. Its famous refrain,

“Hail, hail rock and roll,” became emblematic of the genre. The song resonated with the youth of the time, reflecting their experiences and aspirations. “School Day” reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 1 on the R&B Best Sellers chart, cementing Berry’s influence on the rock and roll movement .
Graduation (Friends Forever) – Vitamin C

“Graduation (Friends Forever)” is a pop song by American singer Vitamin C, released in 2000 as the second single from her self-titled debut album. The song reflects on the nostalgic and sentimental feelings associated with graduating from school, emphasizing themes of friendship, the passage of time, and the transition into adulthood.

Its lyrics, structured around a class’s reflections and promises to stay in touch, resonated with graduates, making it a staple at graduation ceremonies. The song peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 7 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart, enjoying significant popularity in the early 2000s .
ABC – The Jackson 5

“ABC” is a hit song by The Jackson 5, released in 1970 as the title track from their second album. The song, written by the Motown team of The Corporation, uses the metaphor of learning the alphabet and basic math to describe the ease of falling in love. With its upbeat tempo and catchy lyrics,

“ABC” showcases the youthful exuberance and vocal talent of the group, particularly young Michael Jackson. The song achieved significant commercial success, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it famously knocked The Beatles’ “Let It Be” off the top spot, and also topped the R&B chart. “ABC” remains one of The Jackson 5’s most enduring hits, celebrated for its infectious energy and timeless appeal.
Wonderful World – Sam Cooke

“Wonderful World,” also known as “(What a) Wonderful World,” is a classic soul song by Sam Cooke, released in 1960. The song’s lyrics humorously convey a student’s lack of academic knowledge contrasted with a heartfelt understanding of love, encapsulated in the lines, “Don’t know much about history, don’t know much biology.”

Written by Cooke, Lou Adler, and Herb Alpert, the song celebrates the simplicity and joy of being in love despite other shortcomings. “Wonderful World” reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the R&B chart, becoming one of Cooke’s most enduring hits and a staple of his repertoire, illustrating his smooth vocal style and ability to connect with a wide audience.
We’re Going to Be Friends – The White Stripes

“We’re Going to Be Friends” is a song by The White Stripes from their 2002 album “White Blood Cells.” Written by Jack White, the song is characterized by its simple acoustic arrangement and nostalgic lyrics that depict the innocent and heartfelt experience of childhood friendship. The narrative follows two children as they walk to school, play, and learn together,

highlighting the purity and simplicity of their bond. Although it wasn’t released as a commercial single and did not chart on major Billboard charts, the song has gained considerable popularity and critical acclaim. It has been featured in various films and TV shows, enhancing its status as a beloved piece of the band’s repertoire.
