Continuously vs. Continually

The words “continuously” and “continually” are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings. Continuously refers to something happening without interruption. If an action or process is continuous, it occurs in an unbroken and uninterrupted sequence.

Continually refers to something happening repeatedly over a period of time. If an action or process is continual, it occurs frequently or regularly, but there may be breaks or pauses in between occurrences. Both of these are adverbs, words that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb, often describing how, when, where, or to what extent something occurs.
