Shannen Doherty Dies

Her role as Brenda Walsh in the hit TV series “Beverly Hills, 90210” catapulted her to stardom.

Shannen Maria Doherty was born on April 12, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee. She is the daughter of Rosa Elizabeth, a beauty parlor owner, and John Thomas Doherty Jr., a mortgage consultant. She has Irish Catholic roots and was raised in a strict household. From a young age, Shannen displayed a strong interest in acting, which her parents encouraged. She attended George Ellery Hale Middle School and later went to Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, where she continued to pursue her acting career alongside her studies.

Doherty’s acting career began at a young age with guest roles in television series like “Father Murphy” and “Voyagers!” Her big break came when she was cast as Jenny Wilder in the popular series “Little House on the Prairie” (1982-1983). However, her role as Brenda Walsh in the hit TV series “Beverly Hills, 90210” (1990-1994) catapulted her to stardom. Doherty’s portrayal of Brenda was a major factor in the show’s success, making her a household name.

After leaving “Beverly Hills, 90210,” Doherty continued to find success in television. She starred as Prue Halliwell in the supernatural drama series “Charmed” (1998-2001). Her departure from the show was reportedly due to conflicts with her co-stars and producers,

but she left a lasting impact on fans. Doherty also appeared in films such as “Heathers” (1989), “Mallrats” (1995), and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” (2001). Shannen Doherty’s personal life has often been in the spotlight.

In early 1993, Doherty was briefly engaged to Max Factor heir Dean Jay Factor before he filed for a restraining order on May 25, 1993. He alleged physical violence and threats on the part of Doherty, although Doherty’s father claimed that the abuse came from Factor and not her.

She has been married three times, first to George Hamilton’s son, Ashley Hamilton (1993-1994), then to poker player Rick Salomon (2002-2003), and to photographer Kurt Iswarienko since 2011. Doherty has also been open about her health struggles. In 2015, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she has been candid about her journey through treatment and remission.

It’s no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship, but at its core was someone I deeply respected and was in awe of. She was a talented actress, beloved by many and the world is less without her. My condolences to all who loved her.

Her bravery and honesty have inspired many, and she continues to advocate for cancer awareness and research. Throughout her career, Shannen Doherty has received several accolades.

In November 2018, Doherty lost her house to the Woolsey Fire. It was a devastating wildfire that erupted on November 8, 2018, in Ventura and Los Angeles counties in California. It burned approximately 96,949 acres, destroyed 1,643 structures, and forced the evacuation of nearly 300,000 people. The fire resulted in three fatalities and caused significant damage to communities, including Malibu. The fire was fully contained by November 21, 2018, but its impacts on the affected regions were long-lasting.

She won the Young Artist Award for Best Young Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “Little House on the Prairie.” Her performances in “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed” earned her nominations for the Saturn Award and the TV Land Award. Additionally, she received a Webby Award for her work on the digital series “Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty.”

Shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of my friend Shannen. She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family in this dark time.

She had recently revealed that her breast cancer had metastized to her brain. Shannen Doherty died from her cancer on July 13, 2024, aged 53, at her home in Malibu, California. She is survived by her mother, Rosa, and her older brother, Sean.
