Frank Fritz was a television personality best known for his role on American Pickers, a hit reality show on the History Channel. Fritz co-hosted the show alongside Mike Wolfe, and together they traveled across the U.S. “picking” through collections of antiques and vintage items. Fritz was loved for his everyman demeanor,

knowledge of collectibles, and unique eye for finding hidden gems in forgotten places. However, his time on American Pickers came to an end in 2021 under difficult circumstances, which has led to widespread interest in his life story, both on and off screen. Frank Fritz was born on October 11, 1965, in Davenport, Iowa. From a young age, Fritz had a passion for collecting antiques and memorabilia.

He was fascinated by old motorcycles, cars, and anything that had a story behind it. This interest in collectibles started in childhood when he began picking through garage sales and junkyards, buying items that caught his eye. He attended Bettendorf High School in Bettendorf, Iowa, where he first met Mike Wolfe, his future American Pickers co-host. However, their paths diverged for many years after high school. Fritz worked as a fire inspector for 25 years after finishing school.

During this time, he continued his passion for collecting, often buying and selling items on the side. In 2010, Frank Fritz’s life changed when he joined Mike Wolfe on the History Channel’s new show American Pickers. The series followed Fritz and Wolfe as they traveled across America, visiting junkyards,

barns, and homes in search of rare collectibles and forgotten treasures. Fritz was the “motorcycle guy” of the duo, with a particular interest in anything related to motorbikes, old signs, and oil cans, which differentiated him from Wolfe, who leaned more toward antique furniture and other larger collectibles.

The show quickly became a hit, with its mix of history, humor, and human connection. Fritz and Wolfe had a dynamic, long-time-friends chemistry that appealed to viewers. Over 21 seasons, American Pickers gained a massive fanbase, and Fritz became a beloved television personality.

In 2021, it was announced that Frank Fritz would not be returning to American Pickers following a hiatus that began in 2020. His exit was initially attributed to health issues;

Fritz had undergone back surgery and struggled with Crohn’s disease, a chronic condition he had been dealing with for years. Crohn’s disease often caused him discomfort during filming, which led to him taking breaks from the show. However, over time, it became apparent that other factors contributed to his departure. Fritz later revealed in interviews that he felt sidelined by the show’s producers and that his relationship with Mike Wolfe had deteriorated.

He mentioned that he hadn’t spoken to Wolfe for some time before his exit and expressed frustration with how his departure was handled. Wolfe, in contrast, made public statements wishing Fritz well and hoped for his recovery. Additionally, Fritz had struggled with personal issues, including alcohol addiction, which may have impacted his role on the show.

He entered rehab and was candid about his desire to focus on his health and sobriety. Frank Fritz has largely kept his personal life private, though certain details have emerged over the years. Frank Fritz died Monday, September 30, 2024, at a hospice facility in Davenport, Iowa. He was 60. Frank’s survivors were not named but he will be missed by his many fans, like me, who enjoyed watching him on American Pickers.
