David Klein was a notable American graphic designer and illustrator, celebrated for his iconic travel posters and significant contributions to mid-century modern art. His work for Trans World Airlines (TWA) in the 1950s and 1960s solidified his reputation as a pioneer in vibrant and captivating commercial art. David Klein was born in El Paso, Texas, in 1918, and grew up in California. His artistic journey began in the burgeoning art scenes of Los Angeles and New York City.

Klein initially worked in theater, creating stage sets and promotional materials, which honed his sense of composition and dramatic flair. His involvement in theater connected him to the progressive art movements of the time, including surrealism and abstract expressionism, which later influenced his commercial work. During the 1930s and 1940s, Klein contributed to works for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), where he created murals and other public art projects.

These early endeavors helped establish his reputation as a versatile artist capable of merging art with public engagement. Klein is best known for his series of posters created for TWA, especially during the airline’s golden age in the 1950s and 1960s. His posters showcased various destinations worldwide, from Paris to New York, using bold colors, abstract shapes, and dynamic typography. His style often included elements of futurism and modernism, emphasizing the excitement and glamour of air travel during that era.

One of his most iconic works is the 1956 “New York Fly TWA” poster, which features a vibrant depiction of Times Square with fireworks and neon lights. This piece is considered a masterpiece of mid-century modern design and is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Interest in Klein’s work saw a resurgence in the late 20th and early 21st centuries as mid-century modern aesthetics regained popularity. Collectors and design enthusiasts rediscovered his TWA posters,

which became symbols of a bygone era of optimism and innovation in travel. Klein’s works have been exhibited in museums and galleries, highlighting his lasting influence on graphic design and advertising. David Klein led a relatively private personal life. He lived and worked in New York City for much of his career. Despite his fame in the commercial art world, he was known for his modesty and dedication to his craft. His passion for art extended beyond posters, as he also created fine art pieces in his later years.

Although Klein did not receive widespread recognition during his lifetime in the fine art community, his work earned critical acclaim within the advertising and design industries. His TWA posters have become collectible items, fetching high prices at auctions and serving as quintessential examples of mid-century modern design. The Museum of Modern Art’s inclusion of his work further cemented his status as a significant artist of his era.
