Mike Pinera is a talented musician, guitarist, and songwriter, renowned for his contributions to rock music, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s. His career spans decades and includes work with some iconic bands, a solo career, and collaborations with other notable artists. Here’s an overview of his life and career. Mike Pinera was born on September 29, 1948, in Tampa, Florida. From an early age, he exhibited a deep interest in music, teaching himself guitar and drawing inspiration from the burgeoning rock and blues scenes of the 1950s and 1960s.

His early exposure to diverse musical styles helped shape his unique approach to songwriting and guitar playing, blending rock, blues, and psychedelia elements. Pinera first gained prominence as the lead guitarist and vocalist for the Tampa-based band Blues Image,

which he co-founded in the late 1960s. Band founders Pinera, Mike Betematti (drums), Malcolm Jones (bass), and Joe Lala (percussion) met as students at Tampa’s Jefferson High School. Pinera had been part of the Impalas, the Motions, and the El Dorados, teen garage bands. Blues Image opened for a range of bands including Cream, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, The Yardbirds, and Led Zeppelin.

Blues Image is best remembered for their 1970 hit “Ride Captain Ride,” a song co-written by Pinera that reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1969, Blues Image supported Led Zeppelin at Miami’s ultra-hip Thee Image club, and Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page began a years-long friendship with Pinera.
I went into the bathroom and locked the door. I was in there for 10 to 15 minutes and all the words and melody came to me for ‘Ride Captain Ride.’ It came at a good time because my parents were financially strapped and challenged and I made enough money from that gold single to pay off my father and mother’s house.

Page pronounced Blues Image, which by then included keyboard player Skip Conte, “the most dynamic sound in the country.” Blues Image’s blend of rock, blues, and Latin rhythms set them apart in the rock scene, though the band dissolved shortly after their peak success.

After Blues Image, Pinera joined Iron Butterfly, a band famous for their groundbreaking album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. With Iron Butterfly, Pinera brought his distinctive guitar style to albums like Metamorphosis (1970),

helping the band explore more progressive rock elements. He also contributed to the development of Iron Butterfly’s live performances, which became increasingly elaborate during his tenure. In the 1970s, Pinera embarked on a solo career, releasing albums like Isla (1978), which showcased his smooth, melodic guitar work and a mix of rock, blues, and pop influences.

His solo work allowed him to delve into different musical styles, reflecting his versatility as a musician. He then formed the band Ramatam with Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Pinera also became a member of the New Cactus Band, formed the band Thee Image, and collaborated with artists such as Alice Cooper, contributing to Cooper’s touring band in the late 1970s.

During his time with Cooper, Pinera honed his skills as a live performer, further cementing his reputation as a dynamic guitarist. Throughout his career, Pinera participated in various projects, including reunion tours with Blues Image and Iron Butterfly.

His contributions to the rock world, particularly during the genre’s formative years, have left a lasting impact. While Pinera is known for his contributions to music, he has largely kept his personal life out of the public eye. However, he has been an advocate for musical education and often speaks about the

importance of preserving rock history and inspiring future generations of musicians. Mike Pinera’s blend of technical skill, creativity, and passion for music has made him a respected figure in the rock and blues scenes. His work with Blues Image and Iron Butterfly, along with his solo projects,

remains influential and celebrated by fans and critics alike. Mike Pinera died, of liver failure, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the age of 76. He passed away at home in Tampa, Florida, after a long illness.
