White Summer – Doyle’s Space: Music Hall of Fame – Telstar Award

The piece was inspired by Irish and Middle Eastern musical styles.

“White Summer” is an instrumental piece by The Yardbirds, prominently featuring guitarist Jimmy Page. It is a striking example of Page’s experimentation with Indian and Middle Eastern influences, blending them with blues and rock. The song is a showcase of virtuosity, mood, and cultural fusion that prefigures Page’s work with Led Zeppelin.

The composition of “White Summer” is credited solely to Jimmy Page. The piece was inspired by Irish and Middle Eastern musical styles, with its central riff bearing a striking resemblance to the traditional Irish folk song “She Moved Through the Fair”1. Though the tune isn’t officially acknowledged as a traditional adaptation,

its structure and phrasing suggest Page drew significant influence from these sources. His use of the DADGAD tuning—a tuning commonly associated with Celtic music—allowed for the open, droning sound that defines the piece. “White Summer” first appeared on Little Games, The Yardbirds’ final studio album released in 1967.

The recording highlights Page’s innovative guitar work, using fingerpicking and modal scales to evoke an exotic atmosphere. The sparse arrangement places the guitar at the forefront, accompanied only by minimalist percussion.

After the dissolution of The Yardbirds, Page continued to perform “White Summer” with Led Zeppelin. It became a regular part of his live guitar medleys, often paired with “Black Mountain Side” (a track from Led Zeppelin’s debut album that shares similar musical DNA). These medleys were a hallmark of Led Zeppelin’s live performances,

showcasing Page’s ability to blend diverse musical traditions into a cohesive performance. While “White Summer” lacks lyrics, its meaning lies in its evocative atmosphere and innovative fusion of musical traditions. The title suggests a sense of serenity or nostalgia, which is echoed in the composition’s meditative quality. It represents Page’s early fascination with world music and foreshadows his later forays into incorporating diverse cultural influences into rock music.

The piece is often regarded as a precursor to Page’s groundbreaking work with Led Zeppelin, where he would expand on the musical ideas explored in “White Summer”. While not a commercial hit, it has been celebrated by fans and critics for its artistry and originality.

Rolling Stone and other music outlets have occasionally mentioned the track as an example of The Yardbirds’ innovative spirit during their later years. Live versions of “White Summer” have been widely circulated in bootlegs, and the track remains a favorite among guitar enthusiasts for its technical brilliance and unique tuning.

It continues to be an essential part of Page’s legacy as a guitarist who bridged the gap between rock and global musical traditions. Though not ranked on major lists of greatest rock songs, “White Summer” holds a respected place in the evolution of rock guitar.

It has been praised by musicians and critics for its bold departure from traditional rock structures and its influence on the burgeoning genre of psychedelic rock. The track is often cited as an example of how rock artists in the 1960s began to look beyond Western traditions for inspiration.
