Red (2010) and Red 2 (2013)

The story follows Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), a retired CIA black-ops agent, who finds himself the target of an assassination squad.

I recently watched Red (2010) for the second time and Red 2 (2013) on the same day. I remembered liking Red, and I enjoyed it again. I had never seen Red 2 (2013) and was pleasantly surprised that I liked it just as much as the first film. Both films are enjoyable, spy shoot-em-ups, with just the right amount of humor. Some reviewers state that Red 2 is a “Sloppy, cartoonishly violent sequel that fails to match the original”, but I would disagree.

Directed by Robert Schwentke, Red (2010) is a comedic action film based on the limited comic book series Red by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. The film was produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian, with a screenplay by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber. It was distributed by Summit Entertainment and released on October 15, 2010. The story follows Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), a retired CIA black-ops agent, who finds himself the target of an assassination squad.

To uncover the reason behind the attack, he reunites his former team, including Marvin Boggs (John Malkovich), Joe Matheson (Morgan Freeman), and Victoria Winslow (Helen Mirren). Along the way, he involves a civilian, Sarah Ross (Mary-Louise Parker), who becomes entangled in the chaos. The plot revolves around Frank and his allies uncovering a government conspiracy and taking on CIA operatives led by William Cooper (Karl Urban).

Richard Dreyfuss plays Alexander Dunning, a corrupt businessman tied to the conspiracy, while Brian Cox appears as Ivan Simanov, a former Russian adversary-turned-ally. Following the success of Red, a sequel, Red 2, was released on July 19, 2013, with a new director, Dean Parisot, taking over from Robert Schwentke. The screenplay was once again written by Jon and Erich Hoeber, and the film was produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian.

The story picks up with Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) attempting to live a normal life with Sarah Ross (Mary-Louise Parker), but his plans are disrupted when his paranoid former partner, Marvin Boggs (John Malkovich), warns him that they are being targeted again. The U.S. government believes that they are connected to a Cold War-era operation called “Nightshade,”

which involved a missing portable nuclear weapon. To clear their names and prevent a global crisis, Frank and his team set out to locate Dr. Edward Bailey (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant but eccentric scientist who was imprisoned for decades due to his involvement with the device.

As they travel across multiple countries, they encounter Victoria Winslow (Helen Mirren), who has been hired to eliminate them, and Ivan Simanov (Brian Cox), Frank’s old Russian rival. The team also faces new threats, including Han Cho Bai (Byung-hun Lee), a skilled Korean assassin with a personal vendetta,

and Jack Horton (Neal McDonough), a ruthless government operative. Along the way, Frank’s relationship with Sarah is tested, especially when they cross paths with Katja (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a seductive Russian agent and Frank’s former flame. Dr. Edward Bailey, played by Anthony Hopkins, becomes a key figure in the story. Initially presented as a frail and confused old man locked away in a British asylum,

Bailey soon reveals himself to be far more cunning and dangerous than he appears. His true intentions are gradually unveiled, leading to a major twist that complicates the team’s mission. Hopkins brings his signature charm and unpredictability to the role, making Bailey one of the film’s standout characters.

Robert Schwentke is a German filmmaker known for directing action and thriller films in both Hollywood and Germany. Born on February 15, 1968, in Stuttgart, Germany, he studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the American Film Institute.

Schwentke gained international recognition with Flightplan (2005), a psychological thriller starring Jodie Foster. He later directed The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009), an adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel, before helming the action-comedy Red (2010), which became a commercial success. Dean Parisot is an American director known for his work in comedy and action films, as well as television. Born on July 19, 1952, he gained prominence with Galaxy Quest (1999), a sci-fi comedy that became a cult classic.

He has directed numerous television episodes for acclaimed series such as Monk, Justified, Masters of Sex, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Parisot took on the action-comedy genre with Red 2 (2013), the sequel to Red (2010), bringing his signature comedic touch to the espionage thriller. Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner are the creative duo behind the comic book Red, which served as the inspiration for the Red film series. His storytelling often blends science fiction, political themes, and dark humor. Cully Hamner, an American comic book artist and writer, is best known for his dynamic artwork in Red

and his contributions to Blue Beetle and Detective Comics. Red, originally published by WildStorm in 2003, was a much darker and more serious take on the premise of retired intelligence operatives, contrasting with the more comedic tone of the films. Hamner’s bold visual style and Ellis’s sharp writing made Red a standout in the espionage thriller genre. Shooting for Red took place in various locations, including Toronto, Hamilton, and New Orleans,

with Canada standing in for multiple U.S. settings. The film blends action with humor and was well-received for its performances, especially from its veteran cast. It grossed approximately $199 million worldwide. Production for Red 2 took place in Canada, France, and the United Kingdom,

with filming locations including Montreal, Paris, and London. While the sequel retained much of the first film’s charm, it received mixed reviews, with some critics feeling it lacked the freshness of its predecessor. Nevertheless, it grossed over $148 million worldwide. The Red films feature several notable casting changes and behind-the-scenes details.

While Morgan Freeman’s character was a key part of the first film, he did not return for Red 2 due to his character’s demise. The title “Red” stands for “Retired, Extremely Dangerous,” reflecting the protagonists’ elite intelligence backgrounds. Unlike the darker tone of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s original comic,

the films adopt a more comedic and lighthearted approach. Red 2 introduced new characters, including Catherine Zeta-Jones as Katja, Frank’s former love interest, and Byung-hun Lee as Han Cho Bai, a martial arts expert and assassin. Anthony Hopkins joined the cast as Dr. Edward Bailey, adding an element of unpredictability to the sequel. Many scenes set in international locations, such as Paris and London, were actually filmed in Montreal, showcasing its versatility as a stand-in for global settings.
