Denver Pyle was an American film and television actor best known for his roles as Uncle Jesse Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard and Briscoe Darling on The Andy Griffith Show. Born on May 11, 1920, in Bethune, Colorado, to farmers Ben H. Pyle and Maude Pyle, he grew up during the Great Depression and briefly attended Colorado State University before dropping out. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he pursued a career in entertainment after various jobs,

including working in an oil field and as a drummer. Pyle served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, though some reports suggest he may have served in the Merchant Marine. His acting career began in the late 1940s with small uncredited film roles, gradually transitioning to more prominent parts in the 1950s and 1960s, often in Westerns such as The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza. A familiar face on television, Pyle also appeared in

The Twilight Zone, Perry Mason, and The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, and he played Frank Hamer in Bonnie and Clyde (1967). In addition to acting, he occasionally directed episodes of television and invested in oil drilling, becoming financially successful outside of Hollywood.
