Roger Cook, the beloved landscape contractor known for his long tenure on PBS’s This Old House, was born in 1954 and raised in Massachusetts, where he developed a deep love for the outdoors and gardening at an early age. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife management

and conservation law from the University of Maine, but his passion for working with plants and shaping outdoor spaces led him to pursue a career in landscaping. In 1982, he co-founded the company K&R Tree and Landscape Company with his wife Kathleen and began contributing behind the scenes to

This Old House, officially becoming the show’s landscape contractor in 1988. For over 30 years, Cook brought practical knowledge, a calm demeanor, and unmatched expertise to millions of viewers, transforming yards with his signature mix of New England practicality and deep environmental respect.

He was also a regular presence on Ask This Old House and other related programs, earning the admiration of both peers and audiences for his educational, down-to-earth approach to landscape construction. Roger became a certified landscape contractor through the Massachusetts Arborist Association and served as president of the board of directors of New England Grows, a prominent horticultural trade show.

After experiencing health issues, he began reducing his role on the show in 2018 and officially stepped down in January 2020, succeeded by Jenn Nawada. In his personal life, he was married to Kathleen until her passing in 2010, and together they had two children.

Roger Cook died on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the age of 69, and is survived by his children, extended family, and generations of fans and colleagues who valued not only his professional contributions but also his warmth, mentorship, and enduring legacy in American home improvement television.
