Johanna Parker Design is a cottage-based creative studio in Colorado run by artist Johanna Parker and her husband, JP d’Andrimont. Their home doubles as a workshop where papier-mâché, painting, sanding, photography, pattern-making, graphic design, and illustration blend seamlessly with daily life. Johanna’s love of art and vintage whimsy, deeply influenced by her Halloween birthdate, gave rise to her signature “spooky-sweet” style, which first gained recognition through grinning black cats and

other festive papier-mâché1 figures when she launched her business in 2003. Before devoting herself to folk art, Johanna worked in television as an art director and earned an Emmy for her design work. Seeking more creative freedom, she returned to hands-on crafting, inspired by the traditions she learned from her mother.

Her decision to leave media behind allowed her to focus on seasonal folk art that has since expanded well beyond Halloween to include Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and other celebrations, all unified by her distinctive nostalgic aesthetic.

Over the years, Johanna Parker Design has combined limited handmade originals with licensed designs produced for a larger audience. Each year she crafts a small number of collectible originals, while her licensed collaborations with gift

and décor companies have brought her designs to stores nationwide. This balance has extended her reach significantly, and her work has been featured in nearly forty national magazines, establishing her as one of the leading contemporary folk artists in seasonal design.

The couple’s 1939 Colorado cottage plays a vital role in their creativity. Filled with vintage fixtures, art deco charm, and antique inspiration, it reflects Johanna’s love for timeless style and provides daily inspiration for her art.

Their gardens and their black cat, Jack, also influence her imaginative designs. Licensing collaborations ensure her whimsical characters appear on figurines, mugs, fabrics, wallpapers, and apparel, while she carefully oversees the production process to maintain her vision. In addition to licensing, Johanna partners with other artisans through her “Partners in Craft” collaborations, expanding her style into new handmade mediums.

Her blog and social media channels give fans a behind-the-scenes look at her process, inspirations, and collaborations, while also honoring creative peers she has worked with along the way. Collectors and admirers often describe her work as timeless and vintage-inspired, with many considering her seasonal designs essential

holiday treasures. Through her dedication to handmade artistry, nostalgic charm, and thoughtful expansion into licensing, Johanna Parker Design has built a unique creative brand that continues to delight collectors and casual fans alike, embodying a spirit of joy, playfulness, and enduring folk art tradition.
Footnotes
- Papier-mâché, which translates from French as “chewed paper,” is an artistic material made by combining pieces or pulp of paper with an adhesive such as glue, starch, or wallpaper paste, and molding it into shapes that harden when dry. This versatile medium has been used for centuries across cultures to create masks, sculptures, toys, piñatas, decorative objects, and even furniture, prized for being lightweight yet durable once sealed. Its origins trace back to China during the Han dynasty, where it was used for helmets and ceremonial items, before spreading to Persia, India, and later Europe, where it became popular for decorative arts in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, papier-mâché remains a popular craft for both folk artists and hobbyists, valued for its affordability, accessibility, and ability to take on intricate detail when painted and finished. ↩︎
