Stone Mountain Pumpkin Festival

One of the most celebrated autumn events in the southeastern United States with the World’s Largest Pumpkin Drone and Light Show.

The Stone Mountain Pumpkin Festival, held annually at Stone Mountain Park near Atlanta, Georgia, has grown into one of the most celebrated autumn events in the southeastern United States. It began as a modest fall-themed gathering, with simple pumpkin displays and seasonal entertainment,

but has since evolved into a large-scale, family-friendly festival combining traditional harvest charm with state-of-the-art visual technology. Known for its motto “Play by Day, Glow by Night,” the festival invites visitors to spend the daylight hours enjoying live performances, pumpkin-themed games, scenic rides, and photo-friendly displays.

When night falls, the park transforms into a radiant world of glowing pumpkins, colorful lights, music, lasers, and synchronized drones. The contrast between daytime play and nighttime spectacle gives the event its distinctive personality, blending the warmth of an old-fashioned fall fair with the

modern excitement of a multimedia light show. The festival typically runs on weekends from mid-September through early November, aligning with Georgia’s mild autumn weather. Families can visit the park’s regular attractions such as the Summit Skyride, Scenic Railroad,

and Great Locomotive Chase Adventure Golf while also participating in themed activities like storytelling, pie-eating contests, and photo ops with costumed characters. By late afternoon, the atmosphere begins to change as thousands of carved and illuminated

pumpkins, glowing tunnels, and blacklight scenes take over the landscape. The park’s designers create immersive areas such as the Enchanted Forest, Dino Glow, and Alice in Wonderland’s maze, where glowing figures and animated projections give a sense of walking through a storybook.

The largest visual transformation happens as dusk deepens and the “Glow by Night” program begins, a coordinated sequence of lights, lasers, and drones set to music that turns the mountain’s base into an outdoor theater of light and motion.

The drone and laser show has become the signature feature of the Stone Mountain Pumpkin Festival. In recent years, the park has used a fleet of around 250 color-changing drones to create intricate images and animations in the night sky, synchronized with lasers and 4K projections on the mountain’s surface.

This display, described by organizers as the “World’s Largest Pumpkin Drone and Light Show,” merges traditional fireworks and modern digital art, making the event feel both nostalgic and futuristic. Scenes of flying witches, dancing pumpkins, and autumn constellations are choreographed

to popular Halloween music, while the finale combines drones, lasers, and fireworks into one sweeping light performance. The effect is especially striking when reflected across the park’s lake, and it has become one of the most photographed seasonal events in Georgia.

Visitors often remark on the attention to detail and atmosphere that the park achieves. The “Pumpkin Tree Lighting Ceremony,” a recurring highlight, features a costumed performer who “flies” to light the festival’s giant pumpkin tree at sundown, signaling the beginning of the evening’s glowing festivities.

Many guests arrive before dusk to enjoy the daytime activities and secure good viewing spots for the nighttime show. While the park’s entry fee includes the festival’s main events, additional parking and food costs are common, and large weekend crowds are expected.

Still, the sense of community and celebration that defines the Pumpkin Festival makes it a cherished autumn ritual for locals and travelers alike. It manages to capture the essence of fall—crisp air, orange light, and playful fantasy—while showcasing how technology can

enhance rather than replace tradition. Over the years, the Stone Mountain Pumpkin Festival has come to symbolize the region’s love of family-oriented entertainment and seasonal celebration. Its combination of storybook charm, advanced visual production, and natural mountain scenery has helped it become one of the most anticipated fall events in the South. Whether one comes to marvel at the drone show, stroll through the glowing pumpkin forests,

or simply enjoy a crisp Georgia evening surrounded by the sights and sounds of autumn, the experience represents an evolving blend of art, technology, and timeless harvest magic.
