Golden Buddha

Opened in the mid-1970s by Been Lee, Golden Buddha settled into its long-standing location on Clairmont Road.

Golden Buddha in Decatur is one of those neighborhood institutions that feels older than its neon sign and familiar storefront would suggest, the kind of place families bring newcomers to when they want a taste of local ritual and reliably large portions. Opened in the mid-1970s by Been Lee, Golden Buddha settled into its long-standing location on Clairmont Road and built a reputation for hearty, American-friendly Chinese fare served in a roomy, slightly retro dining room that still shows the patina of decades of repeat business.

The restaurant’s décor and service style nod to an earlier era of casual, family-run Chinese restaurants in the Atlanta area, and while it has refreshed paint and menus over the years, locals often describe the experience as comfortingly unchanged: approachable, bustling at peak hours,

and welcoming to parties of many sizes. The menu itself is broad in the way older, beloved Chinese-American restaurants tend to be: a wide selection of appetizers, soups, noodle and rice dishes, Szechuan and Cantonese-style entrees, and those sweet-and-savory classics people order on autopilot.

Signature items patrons single out include Peking ribs and the Mongolian beef, along with sesame chicken, honey walnut shrimp, and sizzling rice soup; the portions are famously generous and the flavors lean into the sweet-salty profiles that made the place a staple for decades.

I’ve been going there since 1975. Today I had my usual, Hot Braised Chicken Wings (which is enough for three meals), the hot and sour soup (maybe the best I’ve ever had) and the hot tea (delicious – made for Oolong tea). I included the photos in this post.

Golden Buddha also offers the staples you expect for delivery and carryout—egg rolls, fried rice, lo mein—and a rotating list of both familiar Americanized dishes and spicier Szechuan options for those who prefer heat. Reviews over the years praise certain house specialties while noting that the restaurant’s strengths are consistency, value, and a menu that satisfies a wide range of tastes rather than chasing culinary trends.

As for trivia and local lore, Golden Buddha has threaded itself into Atlanta-area culture beyond mere takeout: it has been a filming location for at least one high-profile production, lending its interior as a backdrop for a scene in the feature film

“I, Tonya,” and generations of DeKalb and Decatur residents remember it as one of their first neighborhood Chinese restaurants. Longtime customers often recall childhood visits, college late-night runs, and weekday lunches that became routines,

and online chatter reflects a split between diners who love its classic, nostalgia-soaked dishes and others who prefer newer, trendier spots—yet even critics of the style concede Golden Buddha’s role as a durable local anchor. For practical details, the restaurant is reachable at

(404) 633-5252 and lists its address as 1905 Clairmont Road, Decatur, GA 30033; it continues to offer dine-in, takeout, and delivery options and remains a go-to for many who want straightforward, familiar Chinese food in the Decatur area.
