These included Emmy Awards, Golden Globe nominations, and recognition from the Directors Guild of America. In his personal life, Reiner’s first marriage was to actress Penny Marshall, with whom he had a daughter, Tracy Reiner. That marriage ended in divorce, and in 1989 he married Michele Singer Reiner,

a photographer and creative collaborator; the couple had three children together and maintained a strong partnership both personally and professionally over more than three decades. Reiner was also known for his political activism and advocacy, championing

causes such as marriage equality, public health initiatives, and civic engagement throughout his life, often blending his public platform with his commitment to social causes. Tragically, on Sunday, December 14, 2025, Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead in their Brentwood, Los Angeles home after responders were called to the

residence in the afternoon; authorities believed both had sustained fatal stab wounds and the Los Angeles Police Department opened a homicide investigation. Reports indicate that their daughter discovered their bodies, and later their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the deaths, though law enforcement continued to investigate and had not released a full motive at the

time of reporting. The shock of the couple’s deaths reverberated through Hollywood and beyond, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes to Reiner’s vast cultural influence and Michele’s creative contributions. Survivors include their children — Tracy, Nick, and their other children with Michele — extended family, and countless colleagues and admirers who remembered them for their creativity, generosity, and impact on film and society.
