Davey Lopes, Gary Walker, David Wiffen, and Nick Pope Die

Four more losses to reflect on, this Spring of 2026…

These guys were a four-time All-Star second baseman and Los Angeles Dodgers legend; a drummer and vocalist with both The Standells and The Walker Brothers; an English-Canadian folk singer-songwriter; and a British UFO investigator who had been employed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), responsible for investigating UFO phenomena.

Davey Lopes

Davey Lopes was born David Earl Lopes on May 3, 1945, in East Providence, Rhode Island, and grew up in a Portuguese American family where athletics became central to his early life, leading him to excel at La Salle Academy before continuing his development at Iowa Wesleyan College, where his speed and defensive instincts distinguished him as a prospect. He debuted in Major League Baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1972 and soon became a key figure in one

of the most celebrated infields in the sport’s history alongside Steve Garvey, Bill Russell, and Ron Cey, earning a reputation as an elite leadoff hitter and base stealer, leading the National League in stolen bases in 1975 and being selected to four All-Star Games between

1978 and 1981 while helping the Dodgers win the 1981 World Series. After leaving Los Angeles, he played for the Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros before retiring in 1987 and moving into coaching, where he was widely respected for his work as a base coach and mentor to younger players.

Off the field, Lopes was notable for his openness about struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, helping to bring awareness to mental health issues in professional sports, and he remained devoted to his wife Joanne and their family. His contributions were recognized with honors such as inclusion among the Dodgers’ Legends of Dodger Baseball. Lopes died on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the age of 80, and he was survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Gary Walker

Gary Walker was born Gary Leeds on March 9, 1942, in Glendale, California, and developed an early interest in music that led him into the Southern California rock scene before he achieved international fame as a member of the Walker Brothers, a group that became especially popular in the United Kingdom during the mid-1960s despite the members not being related.

As the group’s drummer and occasional vocalist, he contributed to their distinctive sound and teen idol image, and after their initial breakup he formed Gary Walker & The Rain, though that project achieved only modest success compared to his earlier fame. Over time he became a cult figure associated with the British Invasion era.

He became an important figure in Toronto’s Yorkville scene and first gained wider notice as a member of the group 3’s a Crowd, where his rich baritone voice and introspective songwriting began to distinguish him from his contemporaries. Transitioning into a solo career, he recorded material that initially reached only a limited

audience but later came to be regarded as deeply influential, particularly his 1971 self-titled album, which is now considered a classic of Canadian folk music. Wiffen’s greatest impact was as a songwriter, with compositions such as “Driving Wheel” and “More Often Than Not” becoming widely admired and covered by artists including Ian and Sylvia and Jerry Jeff Walker,

earning him a reputation as a “songwriter’s songwriter” whose work resonated far beyond his own recordings. His career was at times derailed by struggles with alcoholism, but he later achieved sobriety and experienced a resurgence of appreciation, culminating in honors such as his induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, which recognized the enduring quality and influence of his work. Known as a thoughtful and private individual,

he remained devoted to his family throughout his life. Wiffen died on Saturday, April 5, 2026, at the age of 84, and he was survived by his wife and children, leaving behind a legacy as one of Canada’s most respected and quietly influential folk artists.
