Bonnie Tyler, Randolph Mantooth, Joanna Pettet, and Peter Van Norden Die

Four more losses to reflect on here in 2026 …

These individuals were a Welsh singer known for songs such as “Total Eclipse of the Heart”; an actor who was the firefighter John Gage in Emergency!; was an actress who played Mata Bond in the James Bond spoof Casino Royale; and a character actor who was known for his roles in Police Academy 2 and The Naked Gun 2½.

Bonnie Tyler (July 8, 2026)

Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Susan Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Neath, Glamorgan, Wales, became one of the most distinctive and successful rock and pop singers of her generation through a career that spanned more than five decades. She was the daughter of Glyndŵr Hopkins, a coal miner, and Elsie Hopkins, and grew up in a large working-class family where

music and chapel singing were an important part of everyday life. Educated at local schools in Neath, she left school during her teens and worked in a grocery store and other jobs while pursuing her ambition to become a singer. Her professional career began after she performed with local bands and entered talent competitions, eventually attracting the attention of talent scout Roger Bell, who helped secure her first recording contract.

Adopting the stage name Bonnie Tyler, she released her debut album, The World Starts Tonight, in 1977, but it was the international success of the single “It’s a Heartache” later that year that established her as a major recording artist, reaching the Top 10 in numerous countries and becoming one of the defining songs of the late 1970s.

Shortly before her breakthrough, Tyler underwent surgery to remove vocal cord nodules, and by speaking before her voice had fully recovered she developed the raspy, powerful vocal style that became her unmistakable trademark. Although her commercial fortunes briefly slowed in the early 1980s, she achieved an extraordinary resurgence after collaborating

with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman. Their work together produced the 1983 album Faster Than the Speed of Night, which became the first album by a female solo artist to debut at number one on the UK Albums Chart, and its lead single, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” became a worldwide phenomenon,

reaching number one in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and several other countries while becoming one of the most enduring power ballads in popular music history. She followed with another Steinman classic, “Holding Out for a Hero,” recorded for the 1984 film Footloose, which became another of her signature recordings and remained a fixture in films,

television, commercials, and sporting events for decades. Throughout her long career Tyler released numerous successful albums, including Natural Force, Diamond Cut, Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire, Hide Your Heart, Bitterblue, Free Spirit, Wings, Rocks and Honey, Between the Earth and the Stars, and The Best Is Yet to Come, while maintaining an active international touring schedule well into her seventies. She collaborated with artists

including Mike Oldfield, Rick Wakeman, Cliff Richard, Rod Stewart, and others, and represented the United Kingdom in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with “Believe in Me,” introducing her music to a new generation of fans. Tyler married property developer and businessman Robert Sullivan on July 4, 1973, and their marriage endured for more than fifty years.

The couple had no children, following a miscarriage early in their marriage, and divided their time between homes in Wales and Portugal while maintaining a notably private personal life. She devoted time to charitable causes, enjoyed equestrian pursuits and property restoration,

and was widely admired for her professionalism, warmth, and energetic live performances. Her achievements earned her multiple Grammy Award nominations, numerous gold and platinum records around the world, and recognition as one of the most successful Welsh recording artists of all time. In 2022 she was appointed a

Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to music, adding one of Britain’s highest civilian honors to an already distinguished career. Bonnie Tyler died on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, at the age of 75 after complications following emergency intestinal surgery.

Her death prompted tributes from fellow musicians, industry figures, and millions of fans worldwide, who celebrated her extraordinary voice, resilience, and lasting contributions to rock and pop music. She was survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, her siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless admirers whose appreciation of her timeless recordings ensures that her legacy will endure for generations.

Although she never became a major box-office star, she developed a devoted following and was widely admired by critics and audiences alike for consistently elevating the productions in which she appeared. Away from acting, Pettet’s personal life often attracted public attention.

In 1969 she married actor Alex Cord, and they had one son, Damien Zachary Cord, whose tragic death from an accidental drug overdose in 1995 deeply affected both parents. The marriage ended in divorce in 1989, and Pettet largely withdrew from public life during her later years,

making only occasional appearances while choosing to live privately. She maintained lasting friendships within the entertainment industry and was remembered by colleagues for her warmth, intelligence, professionalism, and quiet sense of humor.

Although she received relatively few major industry awards beyond her early Theatre World Award, her body of work remained highly regarded, particularly by admirers of classic film and television, and her performances continued to find new audiences through streaming services and classic television broadcasts.
