The pair had previously worked together on several television projects and developed the concept under the working title Insomnia Café.

NBC executives expressed interest but requested revisions, leading to additional temporary titles including Friends Like Us and Six of One before the simple title Friends was adopted shortly before the series premiered. Kevin S. Bright joined the project as executive producer and became an essential creative force throughout the show’s entire run.

  • Jon Favreau – Pete Becker – Pete Becker is an enormously wealthy software entrepreneur who falls in love with Monica and attempts to win her affection through generosity and persistence. After they begin dating, Pete unexpectedly abandons business to pursue a career in ultimate fighting despite repeated defeats.   • Kathleen Turner – Helena Handbasket – Helena Handbasket is Chandler Bing’s transgender father, a glamorous Las Vegas drag performer whose strained relationship with Chandler gradually improves before Chandler and Monica’s wedding.   • Cole Sprouse – Ben Geller – Ben Geller is Ross and Carol’s son who appears throughout the series during visits with his father, often participating in humorous situations that reveal Ross’s insecurities and parenting style.   • Dermot Mulroney – Gavin Mitchell – Gavin Mitchell is Rachel Green’s temporary replacement at Ralph Lauren who initially clashes with her professionally before developing mutual romantic feelings. Their brief relationship ultimately cannot compete with Rachel’s lingering love for Ross. Production took place primarily on Stage 24 at the Warner Bros. Studios lot in Burbank, California, before a live studio audience. Most episodes were recorded over several hours, allowing actors to perform scenes much like a stage play while writers adjusted jokes based on audience reactions.
