Fabio Lanzoni, known worldwide simply as Fabio, became the central figure in one of the most bizarre celebrity news stories of the 1990s when he was injured during the inaugural ride of a new roller coaster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg in Virginia. The event occurred on March 30, 1999, during the media opening of Apollo’s Chariot, a steel hypercoaster that was then one of the most anticipated new rides in the United States.

Fabio, whose flowing blond hair and rugged good looks had made him famous as the cover model for hundreds of romance novels, was invited to participate in the promotional event and rode in the front row of the coaster. As the train sped through its course at more than 70 miles per hour, a Canada goose unexpectedly crossed its path.

When the ride returned to the station, observers were shocked to see blood on Fabio’s face and clothing.
