Mutiny is a 2026 British-American action thriller directed by Jean-François Richet and written by Lindsay Michel and J. P. Davis, the latter of whom previously worked with Richet and Jason Statham on Plane (2023). The film stars Statham as Cole Reed, a former Special Forces operative and New York police officer who now works in private security, with Annabelle Wallis as Angie Ellis, Roland Møller as Captain Marko Madsen, Jason Wong as Taran, Adrian Lester as Captain Adam Spencer,

Ramon Tikaram as Tibu Campallo, Arnas Fedaravičius as Mateo Pineda and Chaneil Kular as Kameron Campallo. The film was produced by Marc Butan and Statham for MadRiver Pictures and Statham’s Punch Palace Productions, with Lionsgate distributing it in the United States. It was released theatrically on August 21, 2026, runs approximately 95 minutes, and is rated R in the United States for strong and bloody violence and language.

The story begins when Cole Reed witnesses the murder of his billionaire employer and friend, Tibu Campallo. Rather than being treated as a witness, however, Reed is framed for the killing and suddenly becomes a wanted man. Forced to run while trying to determine who actually ordered the assassination, he discovers that the murder is only one piece of a much larger international conspiracy.

His investigation eventually takes him aboard a massive cargo ship, where the circumstances become increasingly dangerous and escape becomes extraordinarily difficult. The title Mutiny reflects the film’s maritime setting and the breakdown of trust and authority that develops aboard the vessel, while the movie combines the familiar Jason Statham formula of hand-to-hand combat, firearms, pursuit and survival with a mystery involving international criminal activity.

Production began in the United Kingdom in September 2024. London supplied much of the film’s urban material, including sequences shot around Canary Wharf and One Canada Square. The production reportedly had to close the entrance to One Canada Square while filming, an unusual logistical undertaking in one of

London’s busiest financial districts. The filmmakers also used Pinewood Studios for controlled production work, including large-scale sets that allowed the crew to construct portions of the cargo ship while maintaining greater control over stunts and action scenes. This mixture of real locations and studio construction helped give the film both an authentic

contemporary London atmosphere and the enclosed, industrial feeling required for the shipboard portions. Malta became particularly important to the production because so much of Mutiny takes place aboard a cargo vessel. Transport Malta officially documented filming aboard the container ship MV Skylight during October and November 2024. The production used Grand Harbour in Valletta, Marsaxlokk Bay, Malta Freeport, Marsamxett Harbour and areas

of open water off Malta’s eastern coast. Some filming was scheduled overnight, while other work took place several nautical miles offshore. Using an actual container ship rather than relying entirely on artificial sets gave the maritime sequences a physical scale and realism that would have been difficult to duplicate completely on a soundstage.

The production was developed at the 2024 Cannes Film Market, where Statham was already attached to star and Richet was attached to direct. Annabelle Wallis joined the project in September 2024, Jason Wong was added in October, and Møller, Fedaravičius and Lester followed in November. Marcus Trumpp composed the musical score. One of the more interesting aspects of the project is that Statham was not merely its star but also one of its

producers, making Mutiny another example of his increasing involvement in developing the action projects in which he appears. Richet’s reunion with Statham and Davis after Plane also gave the film a creative connection to an earlier action thriller built around an ordinary professional suddenly placed in an extraordinary survival situation.

Mutiny is therefore constructed as both a conspiracy thriller and a contained maritime action movie. Its movement from London’s polished corporate environment to the confined decks and machinery of a cargo ship creates a deliberate contrast: Reed begins in a world of wealth, technology and international business

before being forced into a much more primitive struggle in which physical strength, improvisation and determination become his principal advantages. The film’s real British and Maltese locations,

particularly the use of the MV Skylight and Malta’s working ports, are among its most distinctive production features. For Statham, the picture continues the action-star persona established through films such as The Transporter, Crank, The Mechanic, The Meg, The Beekeeper and Plane, while Richet again emphasizes fast-moving action and a protagonist who must keep fighting while attempting to uncover the truth.
