These guys were an artist, illustrator, and graphic designer whose brilliantly colored, cosmic imagery became closely associated with the psychedelic and “flower power” culture of the 1960s; a fashion designer and costumier, known for Cher, Elton, Tina Turner, Dolly, Carol Burnett Show, etc; an actor best known for principal Richard Belding in Saved By the Bell; and a punter, quarterback for Minnesota, Atlanta, and Los Angeles .

Peter Max Finkelstein (October 19, 1937–September 14, 2026) was a German-born American artist, illustrator, and graphic designer whose brilliantly colored, cosmic imagery became closely associated with the psychedelic and “flower power” culture of the 1960s. Born in Berlin to Jewish parents Salla and Jacob,

he fled Nazi Germany with his family as an infant and spent his childhood in Shanghai, later living in Israel and Paris before settling in Brooklyn at age 16. His fascination with astronomy became a lifelong artistic influence, and in Paris he took sketch classes at the Louvre. In New York, he studied at the Art Students League under Frank Reilly, attended the School of Visual Arts, and also studied at Pratt Institute. In 1962, he and Tom Daly established a

Manhattan design studio, winning awards for illustration and graphic design; Max’s album-cover portrait of blues pianist Meade Lux Lewis won a Society of Illustrators Gold Medal. His swirling, vividly colored posters, advertisements, album covers, and commercial designs made him a major visual presence of the late 1960s, and his work later appeared on postage stamps, aircraft, ships, and artwork for the

Olympics, Super Bowl, World Cup, and other major events. He also created patriotic works, including his celebrated Statue of Liberty paintings and the first environmental U.S. postage stamp in 1974. Max was married twice and had two children, Adam and Libra.

His second wife, Mary Max, died in 2019. Peter Max died Monday, September 14, 2026, at age 88; his son said he had been suffering from advanced dementia, although no specific cause of death was announced. He was survived by his children Adam Max and Libra Astro.

Bob Mackie, born Robert Gordon Mackie on March 24, 1939, in Monterey Park, California, was an American fashion and costume designer whose glamorous, theatrical creations became synonymous with Hollywood and television. Raised largely by his paternal grandmother in Alhambra after

his parents divorced, Mackie developed an early fascination with drawing and Technicolor movie musicals. He attended Pasadena City College and the Chouinard Art Institute before leaving school to work as a sketch artist for Hollywood designers Jean Louis and Edith Head. In 1961 he began his professional career in film, and in 1962 he sketched the famous sheer gown that Marilyn Monroe wore while singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy.

Mackie later worked with Ray Aghayan on television productions and shared the first Emmy awarded for costume design. His breakthrough came with The Carol Burnett Show, for which he designed costumes throughout its 11-season run, while his long association with Cher produced some of his most recognizable designs.

He also created costumes for Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Madonna, Liza Minnelli, Elton John, and many others, as well as Barbie fashions. Mackie received nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for The Cher Show, three Academy Award nominations, and the Geoffrey Beene CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award; he was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2002.

His personal life included his partnership with Ray Aghayan and a marriage to showgirl Lulu Porter; his son, Robert, died of AIDS in 1993. Bob Mackie died Monday, September 14, 2026, at age 87 in Palm Springs, California, from pneumonia. He was survived by his former wife, Lulu Porter, and his daughter, Julie Mackie.

Dennis Haskins, born Dennis Button Haskins IV on November 18, 1950, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was an American actor best known for playing Principal Richard Belding on Saved by the Bell and its related series. He attended Notre Dame High School in Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he became involved in theater, student activities, and community theater.

He eventually returned to the university and earned a degree in theater and speech in 2015. Before becoming an actor, Haskins worked in the music business as a manager, agent, and concert promoter, with clients including Tom Jones and Gregg Allman. His acting career began with television appearances in the early 1980s, including The Dukes of Hazzard, Magnum, P.I., and The Twilight Zone. He first played Mr. Belding on Good Morning, Miss Bliss in 1988,

and continued the role when the program became Saved by the Bell in 1989, later appearing as Belding in The College Years and The New Class. He subsequently worked on numerous television programs, including 7th Heaven, How I Met Your Mother, Mad Men, Hot in Cleveland, New Girl, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Haskins received the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Most Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000 and

Notre Dame High School’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017. He was previously married to Sarah Dianne Goins, and they had one son, Dustin. Haskins died Sunday, September 27, 2026, at age 75 in Burbank, California; his cause of death was not initially released, although he had privately battled Parkinson’s disease for several years. He was survived by his son, Dustin.

Bob Lee, born Robert Melville Lee on August 7, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio, was an American professional football quarterback, entrepreneur, educator, and sports administrator who spent most of his life in San Francisco. His family moved to California when he was an infant, and he attended Lowell High School, where he excelled in football and baseball.

He continued his education at San Francisco City College and the University of the Pacific, where he played quarterback and kicker and later earned a master’s degree while playing professional football. Lee joined the NFL and played 14 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, and Los Angeles Rams, reaching three Super Bowls. He was named Vikings Rookie of the Year in 1969

and received Atlanta’s MVP and Team Award in 1973. After football, he established a successful real-estate business, served as athletic director at the University of the Pacific during the 1990s, and worked as a radio play-by-play announcer. He also coached youth baseball and served on community and sports organizations, receiving the National Football Foundation’s Distinguished American Award for community service.

Lee was married to Janice M. Lee, a longtime public-school teacher, and they had three children, Matthew, Jennifer, and Zachary, as well as six grandchildren. Bob Lee died Monday, August 17, 2026, in San Francisco at age 81. His obituary did not disclose a cause of death. He was survived by his wife, three children, six grandchildren, and extended family and friends.
