What Does “OG” Mean?

Today, “OG” most often means an original, pioneer, veteran, or highly respected person or thing.

“OG,” usually pronounced “oh-jee,” is a slang abbreviation that originally stood for “Original Gangster” or “Original Gangsta.” The expression emerged from Los Angeles street and gang culture in the 1970s, where it referred to an early, established, experienced, or highly respected member of a gang. Over time, the term moved beyond its original gang-related meaning and became part of hip-hop

vocabulary and then mainstream American English. Although the term has a tough origin, its modern use is usually much more positive and has little or nothing to do with actual gang activity. The word became especially familiar to a national audience through hip-hop during the 1980s and early 1990s. Rapper Ice-T helped popularize it considerably with his 1991

album and song “O.G. Original Gangster.” In that setting, being an “OG” suggested someone who had been around for a long time, had earned respect, understood the culture, and was considered authentic rather than an imitator. The expression subsequently spread into sports, entertainment, fashion, gaming, business, and ordinary conversation. Today, “OG” most often means an original, pioneer, veteran, or highly respected person or thing.

Someone might say, “She’s an OG in the music business,” meaning that she has been involved for many years and is respected as a veteran. It can also describe something that is considered the original or classic version: “The first Star Wars movies are the OG films.” In this sense, “OG” has become almost synonymous with “the original” or “the one that started it all.” Merriam-Webster defines an OG as someone or something that is an original or originator,

particularly one who is highly respected or regarded. The expression can also be used affectionately among friends. Calling someone “my OG” can mean that the person is a longtime friend, an old-school associate, or somebody who has been there from the beginning. “OG” can therefore convey respect, authenticity, experience, loyalty, and seniority all at once. Its meaning depends heavily on context,

but in everyday modern speech it is generally a compliment. Interestingly, the abbreviation is sometimes written “O.G.” with periods, although the increasingly common form is simply “OG.” In short, while OG originally meant “Original Gangster,” today it usually means someone or something that is original, authentic, experienced, influential, or highly respected.
