The 493D Fighter Squadron, nicknamed The Grim Reapers, is located at RAF Lakenheath, England flying the McDonnell Douglas F-15C/D Eagle within the USAF Europe since 1994. They started as the 56th Bombardment Squadron in WWII in January 1941 flying antisubmarine patrols. They were reassigned to the 493D Fighter-Bomber Squadron in 1943 flying the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt.
In the Cold War, 1952, they were reactivated as NATO Fighter-bomber squadron stationed in France and flying the Republic F-84D Thunderjets. In 1956 they upgraded to the North American F-100D Super Sabre and moved to Lakenheath.
In 1971 they converted to McDonnell F-4D Phantom II. In 1977 they moved to the General Dynamics F111As. In 1994 they traded those for the F15 Eagles. They fought in WWII, The Cold War, Operation Odyssey Dawn, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and continue in support in the Global War on Terrorism.
