I remember, back in the 1980’s, browsing through the great Bass Pro Shops (BPS) catalog like I did with the Sears Wish Book in the 1960’s. I wanted to drive to Springfield, Missouri, really bad, to the only retail store at the time, but never did.
Johnny Morris (born in 1948 Springfield , Missouri. Inducted into the B.A.S.S. Fishing Hall of Fame in 2002. Was a professional B.A.S.S. fisherman and qualified for 5 BassMaster Classics)
founded Bass Pro Shops in 1972 with eight square feet of space in the back of his father’s Brown Derby liquor store in Springfield, the company s sole location for its first 13 years of business. The first catalog was mailed in 1974, some 1,500 items in 180 pages.
The catalogs have grown to over 400 pages and distributed to millions. The Bass Pro brand of rods, reels, tackle, clothes and other supplies have proven to be excellent and money savers.
The stores have aquariums with freshwater fish and some incredible taxidermy pieces. It is like going into a hunting/fishing museum. The Atlanta store was the first outside Missouri and opened in 1995.
Bass Pro sells, archery, guns, clothing, fishing, shooting, hunting, camping, hiking, boats and much more. They acquired their rival, Cabela’s in September of 2017. The largest store currently is the Pyramid in Memphis, Tennessee.
