The King’s Man (2021)

Real power is not found running off to war. Real power lies in understanding who it is you’re truly fighting, and how they can be defeated.

I watched the 2021 spy, action film, a prequel to “Kingsman: The Secret Service” (2014) and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” (2017), called The King’s Man. One man must race against time to stop history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds from starting a war and wiping out millions of people. After being held up a while due to Covid-19 it was released in the United States on December 22, 2021, and in the United Kingdom on December 26, 2021, by 20th Century Studios.

This is the prequel story of how the Kingsman’s spy ring was formed amidst World War I’s international mayhem. The movie follows Duke Orlando Oxford (Ralph Fiennes) as he and his cohorts uncover a villainous group responsible for manipulating world leaders into starting World War I.

This film was co-written, produced, and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Produced films such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Mean Machine, Swept Away, Harry Brown, Kick-Ass 2, Fantasic Four (2015), Rocketman, Bloodshot, Silent Night and directed X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and its sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle).

Filming was in the United Kingdom, some scenes were shot in Piedmont, Italy: Turin, Po river’s street, street of the city and in two palaces close to it; Venaria Reale: the Palace of Venaria and royal gardens; Nichelino, Palazzina di Caccia of Stupinigi and surroundings; Racconigi (Cuneo), Castle of Racconigi.

The first panoramic shots of trenches, with the voiceover of The Shepherd, in particular, the part depicting mountains of shell cases are taken from real photographs of the Battle of The Somme.

Fought between July and November 1916, with no clear winner, it cost the lives of around 700,000 British and French soldiers and 550,000 Germans. As shown, entire battalions were mowed down with machine-gun fire, and over one million shells were fired in the first week alone.

The reviews were pretty much bad or good, not much in-between. There were definitely some on Netflix that had clearly not watched the whole movie, one even admitted they only watched 45 minutes.

I thought the movie was good, maybe a little too long. I was excited to see there will be another one coming. I’ll give this movie 3.5 out of 5.
