Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

It’s gonna be Biblical!

I watched the 2009 Neo-Noir[1] film, “Law Abiding Citizen” on Netflix DVD. Traumatized by the atrocious murders of his wife and daughter (and the flawed justice system that set the killers free) Clyde Shelton gives in to his rage and sets out on a course of vengeance. It turns out that he is someone that shouldn’t have been wronged. The movie was directed by F. Gary Gray (The Negotiator, The Italian Job, The Fate of the Furious, Men in Black: International) from a screenplay written by Kurt Wimmer.

Wimmer also wrote Sphere, The Thomas Crown Affair, Equilibrium, The Recruit, Ultraviolet, Street Kings, Salt, Total Recall, Point Break, Children of the Corn, and The Misfits.

Filming began in January 2009 and took place in and around Philadelphia. Locations included Philadelphia’s City Hall, Girard Bridge, Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, Laurel Hill Cemetery, George W. Hill Correctional Facility, Farmersville, and the now-closed Holmesburg Prison[2].

Footnotes
  1. Neo-noir is a revival of film noir, a genre that had originally flourished during the post-World War II era in the United States—roughly from 1945 to 1960. The French term, film noir, translates literally to English as “black movie” or “dark movie”, indicating sinister stories often presented in a shadowy cinematographic style. Neo-noir has a similar style but with updated themes, content, style, and visual elements. [Back]
  2. Holmesburg Prison, given the nickname “The Terrordome,”[1] was a prison operated by the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Department of Prisons (PDP) from 1896 to 1995. The facility is located at 8215 Torresdale Ave in the Holmesburg section of Philadelphia. It was decommissioned in 1995 when it closed. As of today, the structure still stands and is occasionally used for prisoner overflow and work programs. It was the site of controversial decades-long dermatological, pharmaceutical, and biochemical weapons research projects involving testing on inmates. The experiments and research conducted on prisoners soon influenced ethical standards that are used today in modern[6] research. The creation of the Nuremberg Code with the rule of informed consent was drafted based on this case as well as several others, like the Tuskegee experiments in Alabama. The prison is also notable for several major riots in the early 1970s as well as a report released in 1968, the results of an extensive two-year investigation by the Offices of the Philadelphia Police Commissioner and the District Attorney of Philadelphia documenting hundreds of cases of the rape of inmates. The 1998 book Acres of Skin: Human Experiments at Holmesburg Prison, by Allen M. Hornblum, documents clinical non-therapeutic medical experiments on prison inmates at Holmesburg. [Back]
