Dr. Juliette Tobias-Webb

Juliette has a PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Cambridge.

Dr. Juliette Tobias-Webb is a Behavioural Scientist and one of 60 Australian women nominated as a ‘Superstar in STEM’. Juliette uses psychological and neuroscientific insights to help organizations design better for human decision-making and behavior.

Behavioral Science is an interdisciplinary field that combines elements of psychology, sociology, economics, and anthropology to study human behavior and decision-making. Behavioral scientists aim to understand and explain why people behave the way they do, both individually and in groups, using scientific methods and research techniques.

The Superstars in STEM program is an initiative in Australia that aims to promote gender equality and diversity in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program recognizes and showcases the achievements of female scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians to inspire and encourage young women to pursue careers in STEM. Juliette has a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology[1] from the University of Cambridge. She enjoyed stints as a lecturer and research officer at globally-renowned institutions including the University of British Columbia, the University of Sydney, Bond University, and Kaplan University.

I’ve spent years studying the intricacies of decision making, leadership, behavioural addictions (gambling, gaming, screen time), goal setting, resilience, mental health and diversity and inclusion, and I’ve worked with some of the biggest organisations in the world, helping them navigate the complex landscape of modern work and the future of human and technology. I am on a never-ending quest to uncover and share the secrets of what makes us tick.

She has also published a number of journal articles in leading psychology and neuroscience journals. She teaches an evidenced-based MBA Leadership course[2] that covers topics such as empowerment, motivation, resilience, well-being, and equality through organizational design. Juliette is passionate about working with companies and researchers to design and rigorously test solutions that encourage positive behavioral outcomes.

Dr. Juliette was a co-writer, with Sally M. Gainsbury and Robert Slonim, of “BEHAVIORAL ECONOMICS AND GAMBLING: A NEW PARADIGM FOR APPROACHING HARM-MINIMIZATION”. It was published in Gaming Law Review Vol. 22, No. 10, December 17, 2018.

She specializes in large-scale behavioral change and in designing for individuals facing more complex cognitive situations (mental health, addiction, cognitive decline). She is also passionate about helping individuals be more productive, set and stick to goals, have better well-being, and feel happier.

I heard Dr. Juliette on Dr. Karl’s, Shirtloads of Science podcast talking about why some imagine they are on a winning streak when they are not – and the technology exploiting these beliefs.  A journey through the risk and reward structures of the human mind.

Footnotes
  1. Experimental psychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on conducting controlled experiments to study various aspects of human behavior and cognition. It involves designing and implementing carefully controlled experiments to collect data and test hypotheses, often utilizing techniques such as surveys, observations, and laboratory experiments. Experimental psychologists aim to understand fundamental principles underlying human behavior, perception, memory, learning, motivation, and other psychological processes. They use empirical evidence to make scientific conclusions and contribute to the development of theories and practical applications in psychology. Experimental psychology is an essential field for advancing our understanding of the human mind and behavior. [Back]
  2. An evidence-based MBA leadership course is a program that integrates rigorous academic research and empirical evidence to develop leadership skills and strategies. It involves studying and applying evidence-based practices, theories, and concepts to enhance leadership effectiveness in a business context. This approach emphasizes the use of data-driven decision-making, critical thinking, and evidence-based reasoning to guide leadership practices and decision-making. The course typically covers topics such as leadership theories, organizational behavior, strategic management, and ethical leadership, with a focus on incorporating empirical evidence and research findings into leadership development.
