Dreamland Bar-B-Que

The establishment’s success can be attributed to the quality of its barbecue, the simplicity of its menu, and the welcoming Southern hospitality offered to patrons.

My friend Tim treated me to supper the other day at Dreamland Bar-B-Que, 10730 Alpharetta Highway, Roswell Georgia 30076. Dreamland Bar-B-Que is a popular barbecue restaurant chain with its roots in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The restaurant was founded by John “Big Daddy” Bishop. Bishop, a brick mason by trade, opened Dreamland as a small, family-owned business with a simple menu featuring hickory-smoked ribs. The story goes that Bishop had a small, tin-roofed building that he originally intended to use as a storage space for his brick and mortar business. However, he decided to try his hand at selling barbecue ribs instead. Bishop’s barbecue quickly gained popularity, attracting locals and visitors alike.

The debut restaurant was in the Jerusalem Heights neighborhood of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1958.

The restaurant’s reputation grew not only for its delicious, hickory-smoked ribs but also for its laid-back, no-frills atmosphere. Dreamland Bar-B-Que’s signature ribs became famous for their unique flavor, and the restaurant developed a loyal following over the years. The establishment’s success can be attributed to the quality of its barbecue,

the simplicity of its menu, and the welcoming Southern hospitality offered to patrons. While Dreamland started as a small, family-owned venture, its popularity eventually led to the opening of additional locations,

allowing more people to experience its renowned barbecue. The restaurant has become a cultural icon in the world of Southern barbecue, with its distinctive approach and flavors earning it a lasting place in the culinary landscape.

Since franchised, they have opened Alabama restaurants in Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville, Mobile, and Northport. Dreamland has also opened two restaurants in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area, in Roswell and Duluth. In May 2016, Dreamland Bar-B-Que opened up its first Florida location at the Centre of Tallahassee in Tallahassee, Florida.

John “Big Daddy” Bishop was born in Tuscaloosa in 1921 and spent much of his life working as a brick mason. Bishop passed away in 1997 at 76. In 2019, Dreamland Bar-B-Que founder Bishop was posthumously inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame[1].

He’d be touched. My father was known as quiet and humble, but he always took pride anytime Dreamland received recognition. It would often bring him to tears. He believed the restaurant’s success was confirmation that God had a plan for him. He felt listening to the advice God gave him was the best decision he ever made.
