I’ve always loved music. Later in life I would make playlists on Cassette, CD’s and now on thumbdrives. With these posts I’ll reminisce about some of my all-time favorite songs.

“Long Black Road” is a track by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) written and performed by Jeff Lynne, originally released on the Japanese version of their 2001 album “Zoom.” The song, while not a single, has gained recognition for its distinctive sound and catchy melody. The song is characterized by its driving rhythm, infectious guitar riffs, and Jeff Lynne’s unmistakable vocals.

It carries a sense of urgency and excitement, reminiscent of classic rock ‘n’ roll with a modern twist. Lyrically, “Long Black Road” tells the story of a journey, both literal and metaphorical. The protagonist navigates through life’s twists and turns, facing challenges and uncertainties along the way. Despite the obstacles, there’s a determination to keep moving forward, fueled by the allure of the unknown.

Musically, the track showcases ELO’s signature blend of rock, pop, and orchestral elements. From the pulsating bassline to the soaring strings, every instrument contributes to the song’s dynamic atmosphere. The production is polished yet retains a raw energy that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish. “Long Black Road” is a testament to ELO’s enduring legacy as pioneers of symphonic rock.

It demonstrates their ability to craft timeless songs that resonate with audiences across generations. While perhaps not as well-known as some of their chart-topping hits, “Long Black Road” remains a hidden gem in ELO’s extensive discography, cherished by fans for its infectious energy and irresistible charm. It was also released along with “10538 Overture” on the soundtrack for the 2013 film American Hustle. I remember hearing it for the first time during that movie and being shocked that there was such a great ELO song that I’d never heard.
Long Black Road written by Jeff Lynne
They used to tell me boy you ain't goin' nowhere
With your cheap guitar and your big long hair
You gotta realize all your responsibilities
You gotta get out to work and face reality
You gotta get up in the morning take your heavy load
And you gotta keep goin' down the long black road
So I drifted for a while down the road to ruin
I couldn't find my way I didn't know what I was doin'
I saw a lot of people coming back the other way
So I kept on goin' when I heard them say
"You gotta get up in the morning take your heavy load
And you gotta keep goin' down the long black road"
I made a lot of money I was makin' quite a mess
But they all told me money wouldn't bring me happiness
"You gotta work like a man in a real man's life
You're gonna have to take all the trouble and strife"
You gotta get up in the morning take your heavy load
And you gotta keep goin' down the long black road
