Favorite Songs – Only Happy When it Rains

I’m riding high upon a deep depression, I’m only happy when it rains

I’ve always loved music. Later in life I would make playlists on Cassette, CD’s and now on thumbdrives. With these posts I’ll reminisce about some of my all-time favorite songs.

“Only Happy When It Rains” is a song by the American-Scottish alternative rock band Garbage, released as the lead single from their self-titled debut album in 1995. The song was written and produced by the band’s members Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig. Known for its gritty sound, dark lyrics, and catchy hooks,

“Only Happy When It Rains” became one of Garbage’s signature tracks and a staple of 1990s alternative rock. The song’s lyrics, penned by Manson, explore themes of cynicism, pessimism, and finding solace in misery. The chorus, with its memorable refrain “I’m only happy when it rains,” captures the paradoxical sentiment of finding joy in negativity.

Manson’s vocal delivery exudes a sense of defiance and disillusionment, perfectly complementing the song’s edgy instrumentation. Musically, “Only Happy When It Rains” is characterized by its distorted guitars, driving drums, and electronic elements, showcasing Garbage’s unique blend of rock and electronic influences.

  • Shirley Manson – Lead vocals, guitar
  • Duke Erikson – Bass, guitar, vocals
  • Steve Marker – Guitar, keyboards

The track’s production, overseen by Butch Vig, is marked by its dense layers of sound and atmospheric textures, creating a moody and immersive sonic landscape. Upon its release, “Only Happy When It Rains” received critical acclaim and achieved commercial success,

reaching the top 20 on the charts in several countries. Its accompanying music video, directed by Samuel Bayer, features the band performing amidst a backdrop of swirling clouds and rain, reinforcing the song’s themes of melancholy and emotional turbulence. Over the years,

“Only Happy When It Rains” has remained a fan favorite and a staple of Garbage’s live performances. Its enduring popularity speaks to the song’s enduring appeal and its status as a defining moment in the band’s discography.

I'm only happy when it rains written by Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig

I'm only happy when it rains
I'm only happy when it's complicated
And though I know you can't appreciate it
I'm only happy when it rains

You know I love it when the news is bad
Why it feels so good to feel so sad?
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me

I'm only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are goin' wrong
I only listen to sad, sad songs
I'm only happy when it rains

I only smile in the dark
My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn't accidentally tell you that
I'm only happy when it rains
You'll get the message by the time I'm through
When I complain about me and you
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me

You can keep me company
As long as you don't care

I'm only happy when it rains
You want to hear about my new obsession?
I'm riding high upon a deep depression
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me

[Repeat: x2]
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
