Ambrosia Beetles

Exotic ambrosia beetles are costly pests of ornamental and fruit trees nationwide—from front-yard plantings of Japanese maple and oak to commercially grown orchards of cherry, peach, plum and even avocado.

Ambrosia beetles belong to the subfamily Platypodinae and the family Curculionidae within the order Coleoptera. They are a diverse group of beetles comprising over 3,500 species distributed worldwide.

These beetles are named for their association with ambrosia fungi, which they cultivate and feed upon within their galleries excavated in various woody hosts. The symbiotic relationship between ambrosia beetles and ambrosia fungi is intriguing.

Unlike true agricultural pests, ambrosia beetles do not consume the wood they tunnel into but instead rely on the fungi they cultivate for their nutrition. The beetles bore into trees, creating tunnels, and inoculate these galleries with ambrosia fungi spores.

Ambrosia beetle activity is identifiable by the toothpick-sized sawdust tubes they leave sticking out of holes bored in trees. The fungi grow on the walls of these tunnels, forming a nutritious food source known as “ambrosia.” The beetles feed on this fungal growth, which provides them with essential nutrients for survival and reproduction. The evolutionary origin of ambrosia beetles dates back to the early Cretaceous period, around 130 million years ago.

Fossil evidence suggests that these beetles have had a long-standing association with ambrosia fungi, indicating a coevolutionary history spanning millions of years. Over time, ambrosia beetles have diversified into numerous species, each adapted to exploit different ecological niches and host plants.

Ambrosia beetles play a significant role in forest ecosystems, both ecologically and economically. While some species are considered beneficial as decomposers, aiding in the breakdown of dead and decaying wood, others can have detrimental impacts on forest health.

Invasive ambrosia beetle species, in particular, pose a threat to both natural and managed forests worldwide. These beetles can cause damage by boring into living trees, introducing pathogens, and weakening host plants, leading to tree mortality and potential changes in forest composition and structure.
