Greg Gumbel Dies

Greg Gumbel, born on May 3, 1946, in New Orleans, Louisiana, was a pioneering figure in American sports broadcasting. Raised in Chicago, Illinois, on the city’s South Side, he was the eldest child of Rhea Alice (LeCesne) and Richard Dunbar Gumbel, a judge. Greg attended the De La Salle Institute and later pursued higher education at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1967.

While in college, he showcased his athletic talent as a member of the baseball team. Gumbel’s younger brother, Bryant Gumbel, also rose to prominence in the television industry. Greg Gumbel’s broadcasting career began in 1973 when he joined WMAQ-TV in Chicago as a sports anchor.

Over the years, he established himself as one of the most versatile and respected sportscasters in the industry. His journey included roles at ESPN, NBC Sports, and CBS Sports, where he left an indelible mark. Gumbel made history as the first African-American announcer to call play-by-play for a major U.S. sports championship,

On Friday, December 27, 2024, Greg Gumbel passed away at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Marcy, daughter Michelle and younger brother Bryant, who is also a prominent broadcaster and a former host of the “Today” show.
